Temple Terrace Adult Athletics Gear Up For Summer Season

The city offers a wide variety of sports to adults in the community.

Kids aren’t the only ones who are having fun this summer.

Cory Stultz, 20, of Temple Terrace, is one of several adults gearing up for the summer season of the adult athletic leagues that the  offers.

Cory plays in the co-ed softball league and has been participating in the city’s leagues for the last few years. He also works in the gym at the recreation center and said he decided to join because of the location.

“I have a few friends that I play with in softball tournaments and other places around Tampa, and I thought, ‘Why not play here,’” he said. “It's so close and very convenient for people in the community, and it’s such a great way of meeting more new people.”

Parks and Recreation offers a wide variety of sports from softball to flag football and everything in between. There is a little something for anyone looking to stay active this summer, including co-ed sports.

“Our athletic leagues provide a fun way to lead a healthy lifestyle,” said Scott Andrews, director and coordinator of Temple Terrace athletics. “Many folks dread the idea of going to the gym, or just running for the sake of burning calories. However, when a game/sport is incorporated into the equation, the thought becomes a whole lot more appealing.”

According to Andrews, co-ed softball is one of the most popular leagues the city offers. However, men’s basketball has become one of the largest leagues in less than three seasons. The newest league, which is being offered for its second year, is men’s flag football.

“In the past, we had a pretty popular coed flag football league,” Andrews said. “However, the demand increased for men’s flag football instead.”

Each sport plays a 10-game season. Each team in every sport will then play in the playoffs, making each season last about two to three months.

“Our sports break up the week for many people,” Andrews said. “It is what a lot of them look forward to all week.”

Registration for all sports is open to anyone 18 and older and will end when each league is full. Unlike the city’s youth teams, membership or residence in the city is not required in order to participate. Each team costs $300, and teams can seek out local businesses for sponsorship.
