Former Florida College Professor Dies Suddenly at 53

Marty Pickup, who grew up in Temple Terrace, was playing tennis when he collapsed.

Longtime Temple Terrace resident and former Florida College professor Marty Pickup died suddenly Tuesday, according to a press release from the City of Temple Terrace. Pickup, 53, was playing tennis at the Temple Terrace Family Recreation Complex at about 11:15 a.m. Tuesday when he suddenly collapsed on the court, authorities said in the release. Rec center personnel performed CPR, deployed an automated external defibrillator (AED) and called 9-1-1. When the Temple Terrace Fire Department arrived, Pickup was in cardiac arrest, said Temple Terrace Fire Chief Keith Chapman in the release. EcoFest Features Green Fun, Pies

It's big, it's fun, and it's green: Learning Gate Community School's EcoFest will take over the school's 27-acre campus on Saturday. The event will feature 120 local vendors, from local artists to green products, organic farms and alternative health practicioners. It also will include live music, entertainment, a kids' zone workshops and demonstrations. And, of course, there will be more than a few pies thrown at Patch editor Keli Sipperley. EPCOT’s Liberty Voices to Perform at Florida College

The group will kick off the college’s Life Enrichment Series Sept. 28.

From Florida College: On Sept. 28 in Puckett Auditorium, Florida College commences its 2012-13 Life Enrichment Series in patriotic fashion by hosting The Liberty Voices. The free event begins at 7:30 p.m. and is open to the public. Regarded as America’s premier a cappella stylists, The Liberty Voices are a world-renowned a cappella ensemble that performs American folk and patriotic classics. The group is comprised of members from The Voices of Liberty, a larger ensemble that is a fixture at Disney’s EPCOT Center. The Liberty Voices have performed for five United States presidents and are booked regularly for NCAA football’s Capital One Bowl.

Florida College Welcomes Students, Offers New Programs

Students, parents and faculty celebrated the start of the 2012-13 year Aug. 19.

From Florida College: Following decades of tradition, the Florida College faculty donned their academic regalia Aug. 19 and joined students and parents for an afternoon of welcoming and fellowship in the College’s opening ceremonies. The theme for this year is “Growing In Him,” a reminder of the Christian’s calling to mature in the knowledge and likeness of God, following in the footsteps of His Son, Jesus. President Buddy Payne introduced the theme, reminding us of the incredible potential of a mustard seed (Matthew 13:31) and encouraging students, faculty and staff to “move their own mountains” (Matthew 17:20). Broadway Comes to Camp! is producing the show Aug. 17 and 18.

From Broadway Comes To Camp!: A new drama/summer camp project called Broadway Comes To Camp! is coming to Lake County Aug. 10–18. The nine-day camp features a cast assembled from eight states and two foreign countries and will produce Meredith Willson’s “The Music Man” on Aug. 17 and 18. Royce Chandler, the producer, directed Broadway shows at Florida College in Temple Terrace for 11 years. Those productions drew a large following from senior citizens living throughout central Florida. He and his wife, Hope Chandler, directed summer camps for the college for 20 years as part of the school’s student recruitment work. Now, they have decided to combine the summer camp experience with that of producing a major Broadway musical. The Chandlers …

Florida College’s Academic Dean Attends Alpha Chi Convention in Baltimore

From Florida College: Dr. Dan Petty, academic dean of Florida College and sponsor of Alpha Chi, represented the Florida Xi Chapter at the super-regional convention of Alpha Chi, the national college honor society, March 22-24 in Baltimore. More than 400 delegates representing 84 chapters attended the convention, and more than 200 students featured scholarly, creative and artistic presentations. The students also participated in a national literacy service project by providing books to a local elementary school. Alpha Chi has some 300 chapters in 45 states and the District of Columbia. 2 Florida College Sophomores Named All-Florida Academic Team Members

From Florida College: On April 5, in a special awards ceremony in Orlando, Florida College sophomores Emma Angelo and Emma Bingham were selected as members of the 2012 All-Florida Academic Team. Accredited colleges and universities nominate high-achieving students for the Phi Theta Kappa All-USA Academic Team. By virtue of their standing in this national competition, students are then selected for the All-Florida Academic Team. The criteria for nomination is strict and includes participation in honors organizations, awards and honors for academic accomplishments, academic enrichment through jobs and internships, and any notable academic achievements, skills, and cultural enrichment projects.
