Woodmont Charter School Appoints New Principal

Veteran educator Jason Lewis will lead the school.

From Woodmont Charter School: Charter Schools USA (CSUSA) has appointed Jason Lewis as the new principal at Woodmont Charter School. Lewis has served in the education field since 1993 with his most recent position as a principal in an elementary school in Rochester City School District in New York. Beginning his career as a math teacher, he has had a variety of administrative, leadership and mentor positions over the years. Lewis received his bachelor’s degree in psychology/elementary education from SUNY Brockport where he also received his master’s degree in elementary education. Woodmont to Build Learning Garden

The charter school is breaking ground April 21 and will build the garden via a $4,700 grant from Lowe’s.

From Woodmont Charter School: Woodmont Charter School was awarded a $4,700 Toolbox for Education grant from Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation. Woodmont Charter School is one of more than 585 schools or parent organizations to be awarded a Lowe’s Toolbox for Education grant for parent-initiated school improvement projects benefiting kindergarten through 12th-grade public education across the United States during the 2011-12 school year. The groundbreaking will occur on April 21 at 9 a.m. The grant will be used to create a learning garden at the school, which will include: a paved area for teacher-led instruction; a blueberry forest featuring potted blueberry bushes; a gnome garden with meandering paths through an oak forest; …

Woodmont Charter School Receives $250,000 Grant

Walton Family Foundation expands education choices to low-income students.

Woodmont Charter School has been awarded a $250,000 grant from the Walton Family Foundation, an organization that invests in charter schools to raise student achievement primarily in low-income communities. In order to receive the grant, the recipient must show a record or plan of success and have at least half of its student body qualify for free or reduced lunch. “The Walton Family Foundation’s dedication to ensuring high quality choices among those who are less fortunate should be highly commended,” said Kathleen Stow, principal of Woodmont Charter School, in a press release. “We will use this money to help put textbooks into the hands of low-income students and will be able to hire tutors to help them on their road to success.” …

Woodmont Charter School Opens In August

Temple Terrace's newest school is currently being remodeled and will open in time for the first day of the 2011-12 academic year.

Local parents now have a new option when they consider where to send their kids to school. Woodmont Charter School will open at 10402 N. 56th St. at the former Verizon call center in time for the beginning of the 2011-12 school year. “We are shaving the exterior wall so there is better sight distance as you approach the Serena Drive and North 56th Street intersection,” said Doug Dieck, president of Ryan Companies, which is making improvements to the 57,900-square-foot building. Other changes to the outside of the building have been minimal— parking spaces have been removed to make room for a playground area. The inside, however, has been completely remodeled. City Council Approves Woodmont Charter School Site Plan

At their meeting June 7, the Mayor Joe Affronti and the Temple Terrace City Council: ● Approved the final site plan for Woodmont Charter School, a new school that Charter Schools USA will put at 10402 N. 56 St. in the old 57,900-square-foot Verizon building. The plan calls for an interior remodel of the existing building with no new construction of any additional buildings. There will also be entrances and exists on 56th Street and Serena Drive. When council members saw the preliminary plan on May 3, they were especially concerned with the possibility of students crossing 56th Street. Charter Schools USA representatives addressed those concerns and will require parents to sign an affidavit that prevents their child or children from …

City Council meets tonight. Here is what's on the schedule.

Temple Terrace City Council will meet tonight at 6 p.m. in the chambers at City Hall. According to the meeting agenda, city council members will see the final site plan for Woodmont Charter School, a new school that Charter Schools USA wants to put at 10402 N. 56 St. in the old 57,900-square-foot Verizon building. The preliminary site plan called for an interior remodel of the existing building with no new construction of any additional buildings. It also showed entrances and exists on 56th Street and Serena Drive, and a change in the speed limit from Whiteway to Temple Terrace Heights from 45 mph to 35 mph.
