From Temple Terrace resident Tom Mortenson: The Day After: Finally the political ads have come to an end. Our colors are not red or blue, but rather red, white and blue. Today is a time for all of us regardless of party affiliation to stand together for the good of our county. We are all Americans. As the results of the election become clear, this is an opportunity to recall John Wayne’s speech on the Hyphen, which he found in Webster’s Dictionary defines as a symbol used to divide a compound word or a single word. His words echo true when we talk of partisan politics, too. John Wayne was known for not only his acting, but also his patriotism and straight shooting personality, Here are some of his remarks in this speech worth repeating: “…

From Tom Mortenson: With the visit of Gov. Mitt Romney’s youngest son, Craig Romney, to Temple Terrace, and knowing that three of Romney’s sons were Eagle Scouts, I reflected back on my first encounter with a president of the United States. It was in 1960, at the National Boy Scout Jamboree in Colorado Springs, CO, where I had the opportunity to be selected to visit with President Dwight D. “Ike” Eisenhower as one of a handful of Boy Scouts attending the Jamboree. Ike was the 34th President of the United States from 1953 until 1961. Among his many accomplishments were: But here’s the rest of the story as Paul Harvey used to say. The first time Ike was in a polling booth was when he ran for president in 1952. There were those who hoped he …

Mayor Joe Affronti has written a letter to explain what is at stake regarding the downtown redevelopment project. A vote on the developer’s final plan for the residential units is scheduled for Oct. 9.
Editor’s Note: A special Temple Terrace Redevelopment Agency meeting and City Council meeting regarding the residential portion of the downtown redevelopment project has been scheduled for Oct. 9 at 6 p.m. at the Lightfoot Recreation Center. Developer Vlass Temple Terrace submitted a third and final revision of the plan for this portion on Sept. 25. The council is expected to take a final vote on the issue at the Oct. 9 meeting. From Temple Terrace Mayor Joe Affronti: I am writing this letter in an attempt to answer the questions many of our citizens are asking regarding our redevelopment. Ask a dumb question. Go ahead. It might make you smarter.
Have a question you want to ask but think it might be stupid? It's your day to let loose. According to Wikepedia, Ask a Stupid Question Day was pioneered by U.S. teachers in the 1980s to encourage students to ask more questions in the classroom. (Speaking of teachers, please don't tell my graduate school professors I just quoted Wikepedia.) Though Ask a Stupid Question Day's default date is Sept. 28, it is typically observed on the last school day in September— a win-win in 2012. So...what's the hokey pokey really all about? Who is Jimmy and why is he cracking so much corn? Do kangaroos lie down when they sleep? What if they roll over on their joey? How many licks does it actually take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop? Whatever your …

From Mayor Joe Affronti: I have read the recent comments (on Temple Terrace Patch stories) regarding our redevelopment, and it appears that there is a misunderstanding regarding the Developer's obligation under the MDA (Master Development Agreement). As we have repeatedly stated at our Town Hall meetings, the developer is under no obligation to build condos but is obligated to build “multi-family.” As they have stated, they would like to build condos, but there is no market for them at this time, and it is almost impossible to obtain bank financing to build them. One of the largest and most highly qualified real estate investment companies, Inland Atlantic, has proposed to build 214 high-quality apartments that will increase our density …
