Bald Eagles Land at Golf & Country Club

Each Sunday, we'll post a photo of Temple Terrace nature from someone in the community as our Sunday Nature Photo.

Pierce Rimbey, 12, was at the Temple Terrace Golf & Country Club last week when he saw something he had never seen before: bald eagles in Temple Terrace. Two of them landed at the golf course pond at the third hole. "We think the two eagles were a pair, maybe more TT eagles on the way?" wrote his mom, Susan Pierce-Rimbey, in an email. Mushrooms Grow on Forest Stump

Each Sunday, we'll post a photo of Temple Terrace nature from someone in the community as our Sunday Nature Photo.

If you’ve ever heard about the beauty of the fairy-tale forests in Europe, I can tell you that the stories are true. One of my best friends lives in Finland, and I was lucky enough to travel there last year for a visit. We explored the city of Helsinki and its suburbs, but we also ventured to her sister’s summer cottage in the woods. There, I felt like I had been transported to the world of Snow White or Sleeping Beauty. The forest was almost magical, saturated with gorgeous colors and thriving with vegetation and toadstools. I was reminded of my trip last week when I was walking my dogs near my house and came across this tiny stump with mushrooms growing from it. It seemed a tiny piece of the forest had found me in Temple Terrace. Do you …

Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it. Confucius Thank you Ashley for sharing the picture and the visualization of that forest. Both are beautiful.   more ›

Frog Relaxes After Sunset

Each Sunday, we'll post a photo of Temple Terrace nature from someone in the community as our Sunday Nature Photo.

I was coming home one night, and something caught the corner of my eye as I unlocked my door. I turned to find this frog lounging on a grassy plant that hangs on my porch. Of course, I grabbed my camera to take a photo and also captured the red glow of the street light in the background. Do you have a local nature photo you’d like to share? Gator Swims Up Hillsborough River

Each Sunday, we'll post a photo of Temple Terrace nature from someone in the community as our Sunday Nature Photo.

One of this community's greatest assets is the Hillsborough River, and city officials have been discussing how it can be used to market Temple Terrace. I'm lucky enough to see the river every day from my home office window. I glanced out one afternoon to find this alligator swimming upstream. It was amazing how quick and agile it was for its size. Bush Bears Blossoming Beautyberries

Each Sunday, we'll post a photo of Temple Terrace nature from someone in the community as our Sunday Nature Photo.

If you had asked me a year ago what a beautyberry was, I would have had absolutely no idea what you were talking about. But thanks to blogger Steven McBride, I've learned that beautyberries are Florida native plants that can be a good source of food for birds and other wildlife. They can also be used to make jelly, or as Steven realized, a delicious syrup. I came across these ripening beautyberries recently as I was walking my dog. Although their purple hue easily catches your eye, I thought the color gradient made them even more special. As a community, I think we enjoy learning from our neighbors. If you have interesting stories to share or opinions on issues and events in Temple Terrace, I encourage you to consider blogging on Temple …

Rain Creates Standing Water in Riverhills Park

Each Sunday, we'll post a photo of Temple Terrace nature from someone in the community as our Sunday Nature Photo.

Rick Gibson sent two photos of an oak hammock near the Hillsborough River in Riverhills Park. “Paths through this hammock are usually dry with a thick leaf litter,” Gibson said. “With recent heavy rains the paths have been flooded and being next to a cypress swamp they are slow to drain. The close-up photo shows hundreds of mosquito larvae. Imagine, perhaps millions of mosquitoes hatching from just this one path? Camping anyone? “Notice also the color of the water. The leaf litter leaches tannic acid into the stagnant water (like brewing tea). Eventually drained into the swamps and then into the river, the Hillsborough River gets its amber color from this process.” Do you have a local nature photo you’d like to share? Email it to ashley.…

Raindrops Transform Sticky Spider Web

Each Sunday, we'll post a photo of Temple Terrace nature from someone in the community as our Sunday Nature Photo.

When you think about it, spider webs are fascinating, aren't they? Spiders take time to meticulously craft their sticky food traps from a single thread. The beauty of these webs was only enhanced when I noticed that tiny raindrops had gathered on the threads, turning the insect nets into bejeweled natural wonders.
