Witches, ghosts and other spooks took over Temple Terrace Oct. 31 for Halloween. Businesses in the River Run Preserve shopping center had a special Community Trick-Or-Treat event to kick off the evening. "It gives the kids something safe to do on Halloween," said TRS Tax Refund Services' Wesley Wortham of the second annual event. Randy and Elizabeth Sullivan, owners of Lady Ashley Designs, said they enjoy the kids. "We don't have children young anymore, so this is a way for us to interact with the kids," Elizabeth said. "I just love the expressions on the kids' faces." If we didn't see your family out and about last night, it wasn't a trick. Treat your kids by adding their photos to this gallery. Today is the last (and probably most logical) day to enter Patch's Little Pumpkin Costume Challenge with supermodel Heidi Klum. The contest started Oct. 20, and we've been pushing the part of the prize that includes a three-day, two-night trip to New York or Los Angeles and a meeting with Heidi. But there's another part of the prize that's equally as important: 10 entrants will receive $1,031 each to donate to a local charity of their choice. What charity would you give the money to? Participate in our poll below to see how you compare with others in Temple Terrace.
Did we see you or your neighbors at the Halloween Fall Festival at the Rec Center Saturday? Click through the photos to find out.
Families and friends gathered at the Family Recreation Complex Saturday with their little ghosts and goblins for some spooky fun at the Halloween Fall Festival. If you snapped some pictures at the event, please add them to this gallery by clicking the "Add photos and videos" link or emailing ashley.reams@patch.com. You can also add a photo of your child in his or her costume to our Little Pumpkin Halloween Costume Challenge story for a chance to win a trip to New York or Los Angeles and a meeting with supermodel Heidi Klum.

Busch Gardens best friends Kasi and Mtani, and other cheetahs, had some special Halloween-themed enrichment this week.
Cheetahs are strict carnivores, but the residents of Busch Gardens’ Cheetah Run were curious to explore the new smells and textures that three oversized pumpkins recently provided, according to Jill Revelle, spokesperson for Busch Gardens. Busch Gardens’ zookeepers introduced the pumpkins to the cheetah habitat on Tuesday for some special Halloween-themed enrichment for Kasi, the cheetah, Mtani, the yellow lab, and Cheetah Run’s adolescent female cheetahs, Revelle said. Enrichment can take many forms and is usually something different, unusual and challenging that stimulates the animals, she explained. Food and toys are used daily by zookeepers at Busch Gardens to keep the animals engaged and stimulated, both mentally and physically.

Hey, Temple Terrace! We want to see photos of Halloween decorations at your house or in your neighborhood. If you or your neighbors have spooky, fun or crazy decorations, snap a photo and email it to ashley.reams@patch.com, or simply add it to this gallery by clicking the "Add photos & videos" link.
The undead will take over the campus this week as part of a special conference.
Zombies are on their way to the University of South Florida (USF), and they’re expected to be in full force at the campus Wednesday. The USF Humanities Institute will be hosting a series of events throughout the week as part of their conference, Brain(s) Matter: Zombies in Contemporary Culture, which takes place Wednesday and Thursday. All events are free and open to the public. While there are many mythological creatures that go bump in the night, the zombie seems to have strong cultural staying power and has seen a particular resurgence in popularity over the last five years, according to a USF press release. Major advertising campaigns by Honda and Toshiba feature zombies, and the Center for Disease Control launched a disaster …

The city's annual event offers indoor trick-or-treating, hayrides, carnival games, a haunted house, and a costume parade and contest.
The Family Recreation Complex will be transformed into a haunted red carpet event Saturday during Temple Terrace’s annual Halloween Fall Festival. The event features indoor trick-or-treating, hayrides, carnival games and a haunted house from 6:30 to 8 p.m., and a costume parade and contest from 8 to 8:30 p.m. “It’s something that the city always looks forward to,” said Joel Spinks, a city special events coordinator. This year’s theme is a Hollywood Premiere, so the haunted house will be set up like a movie scene being filmed and a back lot, said Spinks, who helped out with haunted houses at some of the city’s previous Halloween Festivals before becoming special events coordinator about six months ago. “It’s fun,” he said of the event. Rec …

Sometimes going back to the basics can create meaningful holiday memories.
Halloween is just around the corner, and my kids have already planned out expensive and ornate costumes only available online or in specialty stores. Tickets are on sale for elaborate theme park Halloween events with all the bells and whistles and price tag, too. What happened to good old hay rides, neighborhood haunted houses and parties, and homemade costumes? When I was younger, we greatly anticipated these simple activities in preparation for our night of trick-or-treating. To those spoiled with changing seasons, a Florida fall may seem somewhat boring. It’s rare to witness changing colors of the leaves, but when we feel the first crispness in the air, moods begin to change. As a kid, the first hint of cooler weather meant just a few …
