Local Ron Paul Supporters Remain Optimistic

Those who favor the Texas congressman gathered at the Copper Top Pub in Temple Terrace to watch the election results.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney might have taken Florida, but that doesn’t mean Ron Paul supporters are counting out the Texas congressman. Paul Fosse of Citrus Park compared Paul’s campaign to a football game. “Very few football teams quit after the first three minutes,” he said. “They keep going. It seems kind of silly to give up after four states.” Fosse helped organize a Ron Paul Watch Party Tuesday evening at the Copper Top Pub in Temple Terrace using meetup.com and Facebook. About 50 people watched TV news stations report Florida’s election results. Paul hovered around 7 percent of the vote. “We’d be happier if he was in double digits,” Fosse said, “but what’s great is to see the enthusiasm of the supporters.” Young and…

KittenJuggler, I share your feelings about RON PAUL, the only candidate who has read and believes in the United States Constitution. HOWEVER... If he is NOT selected as the Republican Candidate for the General Election.... realize that your vote will likely be "One less for Republicans, one more for Leftist Democrats - NO ONE will notice your (Valid) objection to "the way it is". I seriously ask …   more ›

City Officials ‘Proud’ of Voters

Unofficial election results show that a city economic referendum has passed.

Temple Terrace Mayor Joe Affronti and City Manager Kim Leinbach agreed that they were pleased voters favored a city referendum to give property tax exemptions to new and expanding businesses. According to unofficial election results, nearly 70 percent of voters who cast their ballots voted “yes” on the measure. All 10 precincts were reporting in as of 9:30 p.m. Tuesday. “I think (the results are) indicative of our residents,” said Leinbach. “I think they’re progressively minded.” Affronti said he was proud of voters. “We’re tickled to death,” he said. “I just think it’s great.” The city urged voters to favor the referendum prior to the election. The measure will go before the City Council for final approval. If accepted, it would last for …

Romney Wins Florida GOP Primary; Hillsborough Republicans React

Mitt Romney earns a convincing victory over Newt Gingrich and other Republican nominees in Florida's Presidential Preference Primary.

Mitt Romney won the Florida Presidential Preference Primary on Tuesday, earning the state's 50 delegates and distancing himself from Newt Gingrich as the Republican frontrunner for 2012. The Associated Press projected Romney's commanding victory shortly after 8 p.m. when the final polls closed in Florida's Panhandle. The former Massachusetts governor had taken 46 percent of the vote to 31 percent for Gingrich after returns from 99 percent of the polls were in. Rick Santorum had 13 percent, and Ron Paul 7 percent. "Florida, you're the best," a victorious Romney told a crowd gathered at his primary night celebration at the downtown Tampa Convention Center. Ron Paul supporters gathered at the Copper Top Pub in Temple Terrace. Bob Rocco, 60, …

Few Campaign Signs at Temple Terrace Polls

Temple Terrace doesn’t seem to have any supporters or protesters out today.

In addition to few voters at Temple Terrace polls, there are also few campaign signs and virtually no supporters or protesters waving banners. The only signs Temple Terrace Patch has seen are ones scattered around for Ron Paul.

Many Temple Terrace Voters Favor City Referendum

More voters seem to be for tax breaks for new and expanding businesses rather than against them.

Charles Johnson knew exactly how he was voting when he got to his polling place on Election Day. He said he chose to favor a City of Temple Terrace’s economic referendum, which would give tax exemptions to new and expanding businesses. “They need some tax breaks for the businesses,” Johnson said. The idea behind the referendum is to draw businesses to the city and create jobs, officials have said. Anyone can vote on the measure regardless of party affiliation. Polls are open until 7 p.m. today. Jamie Curtis said he came to his polling place at the Woodmont Clubhouse not sure how he would vote. But once his ballot was in front of him, he too said he voted “yes” on the referendum. “I just think it’ll help Temple Terrace expand and bring more…

Temple Terrace Polls Quiet So Far

Voter turnout is low at local polling places this morning.

There are few cars in parking lots at local polling places this morning and even fewer voters trickling in and out to cast their ballots. According to the Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections Office, 10 precincts are reporting approximately 18 percent of eligible voters in the sample precincts have cast their ballots as of 2:30 p.m. Voter turnout numbers are projections based on a random sampling, and are not scientific in nature. “It’s been very quiet,” said a poll worker at First Baptist Church Temple Terrace who didn’t want to be named. “I think all of (the precincts) are going to be slow because a lot of people did early vote.” According to the Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections website, 1,436 people voted at the Temple…

Light Turnout at Hillsborough Polls This Morning

Voting in the Florida Presidential Preference Primary has only been going on for a few hours.

While turnout at Hillsborough County’s polls has been sparse this morning, the supervisor of elections office predicts a strong turnout overall. Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections Earl Lennard told CNN on Tuesday morning that early voting and vote by mail totals have already exceeded levels from 2008, the last presidential election year. Lennard said he wouldn’t be surprised if he had a 40 percent turnout in Hillsborough. “If history is an indicator … I get the feeling we’re going to have a good, strong, robust turnout,” Lennard told the network. Even so, Lennard’s office reported that about 18 percent of eligible voters had cast their ballot as of 2:30 p.m. today, based on 10 sample precents around the county. The polls remain …

You Can Vote on Temple Terrace Tax Breaks Today

The exemptions would apply to new and expanding businesses.

Today is Election Day, and all registered voters in Temple Terrace regardless of party affiliation can weigh in on a city referendum that would offer tax exemptions to new and existing businesses. The city is urging voters to favor the measure. The idea behind the referendum is to draw in business, which would in turn stimulate economic development and create new jobs, city officials have said. The amount of the exemption would vary from business to business, officials have said. Qualifying new businesses could claim an exemption of 50 percent to 75 percent of the value of property improvements and tangible personal property. Expanding businesses also would be eligible for the exemption based on added improvements and increased tangible …
