Patients Needed for Nationwide Cancer Study

The study targets men and women aged 30-65.

This just in from officials at St. Joseph's Hospitals: St. Joseph’s Hospitals are helping the American Cancer Society find “cancer fighters” in the Tampa Bay area who want to join a historic nationwide study about how genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors may cause or prevent cancer.  Men and women ages 30-65 who have never been diagnosed with cancer are encouraged to enroll in Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3), and can do so during three July events hosted by St. Joseph’s Hospitals: During the enrollment events, research participants will complete a questionnaire and give a small blood sample, along with height, weight and blood pressure information.  Participants don’t have to know all of the answers to the questionnaire at the …

Moffitt Researchers Publish Book on Cancer in Adolescents, Young Adults

The text examines advances in experimental medicine and biology.

There was a time when a diagnosis of cancer in adolescents and young adults was like a death sentence. But over the last 40 years, advances in the treatment, screening and early diagnosis of cancer have turned that historically fatal verdict into an 80 percent survival rate, according to Moffitt Cancer Center. Moffit researchers Gwendolyn Quinn and Susan Vadaparampil, who both hold doctorate degrees, have studied the quality-of-life issues in survivorship, including fertility preservation and other reproductive health issues, according to a Moffitt press release. Now, they’ve published a book, “Reproductive Health and Cancer in Adolescents and Young Adults,” which analyzes the impact of cancer on reproductive health and examines options …

Temple Terrace Doctor Named ‘Family Physician of the Year’

Richard Roetzheim has been recognized by the Florida Academy of Family Physicians.

From the Florida Academy of Family Physicians: The Florida Academy of Family Physicians (FAFP) has named Richard Roetzheim, MD, MSPH, of Temple Terrace, the 2011 Florida Family Physician of the Year. The distinction was conferred to Roetzheim “for exemplifying, in the tradition of family medicine, a compassionate commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of patients and communities in Florida, and possessing personal qualities that make him a role model to professional colleagues.” Recognized worldwide for his research on the importance of primary care for all patients, Roetzheim serves as professor of Family Medicine and director of Research for the University of South Florida (USF) Department of Family Medicine. Junior Woman's Club Makes Cards With Cancer Patients

The Temple Terrace club went to Hope Lodge to bring smiles to those receiving treatment.

In an effort to lift the spirits of those receiving cancer treatment, the GFWC Temple Terrace Junior Woman’s Club visited Tampa Hope Lodge where they got a little crafty. Club members helped residents of Hope Lodge, an American Cancer Society facility that serves as a temporary home for cancer patients of H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center, create hand-made greeting cards. The Junior Woman’s Club presents this card-making class for Hope Lodge residents several times each year, explained club member Anita Long. “The card-making project brings a smile to the faces of residents and club members alike, as they create their own handmade cards,” Long said.
