Man Accused of Stealing Officer's Gun Arrested in Temple Terrace Area

The gun was stolen from a Winter Haven Police Officer on May 18.

A man who athorities say stole a service weapon from an off-duty Winter Haven Police officer was arrested in the Temple Terrace area Tuesday. Damarius Antwun Matthews, 23, was arrested at about 6:45 p.m. at 8713 North 48th Street in the Temple Terrace area, accoridng to the Winter Haven Police Department. "Matthews had a warrant for his arrest for Robbery and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon after he snatched off-duty Deputy Regina Hulverson's purse containing her Department issued badge and credentials along with a .380 Ruger on May 18, 2013 at a Winter Haven grocery store," the department said in an email to Temple Terrace Patch. Here's a look at what's open and what's closed in Temple Terrace and around Hillsborough County in observance of the holiday:  Temple Terrace City Hall and other government offices will be closed Monday. Lightfoot Recreation Center will also be closed. However, the Family Recreation Complex will be open on Memorial Day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m The majority of Hillsborough County offices and facilities will be closed on Monday. My suggestion would be to put "Temple Terrace area" in the headline and in the furture include only homes in the 33617 and 33637 zip code in the listtings for the Temple Terrace area. Temple Terrace Elementary Students Receive National Honors for Year-Long Project

The second-graders tied for first place in the Radiant Peace Foundation's annual education contest.

A group of Temple Terrace Elementary students received national honors for their efforts to promote peace. Lynn Smalley's second-grade class at Temple Terrace Elementary School tied for first place in the Radiant Peace Foundation's annual education contest. The students each made dozens of greeting cards as a year-long service project to deliver to veterans at the James Haley Veterans Hospital in Tampa. In addition, they wrote and illustrated a book dedicated to the veterans who have served the United States, created a peace quilt and made matching T-shirts.   "They learned that a small child can make a big difference in someone's day," said Smalley. Chamber Recognizes 19 Students

The annual Student Awards Luncheon took place May 15.

The Greater Temple Terrace Chamber of Commerce recognized 19 students at its monthly luncheon May 15. The annual Student Awards Luncheon took place at the Temple Terrace Golf & Country Club. Students were honored for their service to their school communities and fellow students, as well as their academic achievements, said Barbara Sparks McGlinchy, the chamber’s executive director. Hillsborough County Commissioner Al Higginbotham was the featured speaker, and the luncheon was sponsored by State Farm Insurance-Jimmy Fisher, Suncoast Schools Federal Credit Union Foundation and Tampa Electric Company. Family Suing School, City of Temple Terrace Following Son's Death

The Schillingford family holds the school and city accountable for their son's death at a back-to-school party in 2012.

In September 2012, Jesse Schillingford died after nearly drowning at the Temple Terrace Family Recreation Complex swimming pool during a back-to-school party. Last week, the Schillingford family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against The Pepin Academey and the City of Temple Terrace, according to ABC Action News.  At the time, an estimated 150 teachers, parents and kids were in attendance. Several lifeguards were also on duty, the city stated in a Temple Terrace Patch report from the time of the incident. Jesse's father, Skelford says that he warned the school that his son wasn't a good swimmer. Here, Farley shows how Felicitous makes its version. Farley has worked at Felicitous for just more than a year, and was promoted to manager last week. She said she became obsessed with coffee as a teenager when her sister worked at Starbucks. "I just really like coffee," she said.
