‘Click It or Ticket’ Aims to Increase Seat Belt Use

The Temple Terrace Police Department is encouraging residents to buckle up.

As motorists take to the roads this Memorial Day weekend, the Temple Terrace Police Department is urging everyone to buckle their seat belts. Since May 20, law enforcement officials have been participating in the national 2013 Click It or Ticket campaign, which runs until June 2 and aims to crack down on motorists who don’t wear their seat belt. “As we kick off the busy summer driving season, it’s important that everyone buckles up every time they go out, both day and night—no excuses,” said TTPD Capt. Mike Pridemore in a press release. “Our officers are prepared to ticket anyone who is not wearing their seat belt.” According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 52 percent of …

Baker Turns Oatmeal into Cookie Business

Patricia Counts, who bakes cookies in Temple Terrace, sells her treats online and at the Fresh Market at The Shops at Wiregrass.

When Patricia Counts was 20 years old, she was living abroad. Her father was in the U.S. Air Force, which took the family to the Philippines. “My mom used to buy these boxes of oatmeal because they had drinking glasses inside,” Counts said. “She wanted to get the whole collection.” The multiple boxes of oatmeal in the home gave Counts a reason to begin baking oatmeal cookies, a hobby she has enjoyed ever since. Now, at the age of 61, Counts has her own business, Miss Pat’s Cookies, and bakes a variety of cookies in a kitchen in Temple Terrace. She sells the treats online as well as at the Fresh Market at The Shops at Wiregrass on the first and third Saturdays of the month. She started the business nearly three years ago after working as a …

In just four years time, Joey Redner has gone from beer enthusiast and upstart brewer to an award winning craft brewer that will produce 25,000 barrels of ale in 2013. Son of the famous Mons Venus owner, Joe Redner, the 40-year old craft beer connoisseur has taken his sales and his connections with the beer community to the next level in recent months. Local Veterans Face Long Waits for VA Benefits

As our armed forces come home from the Middle East, the local Veterans Affairs benefits office is being stretched.

Our veterans are now facing a new enemy at home – long wait times for disability claims. The waiting times started increasing in 2010 when U.S. troops were withdrawn from Iraq, causing a dramatic uptick in first-time filers, according to the Center for Investigative Reporting. The data found that in most regional VA offices, not only did waiting times increase, but they vary dramatically by location: about a year and five months in Baltimore, Maryland compared to four months in Fargo, North Dakota. The national average now stands at about 11 months, which is dramatically higher than in 2009 when it was four months. The backlog of veterans at the St. Petersburg area office waiting on a disability claim to be reveiwed has increased from no …

Nationwide, gas prices were predicted to be lower this summer compared to the last three years, but that won't translate into savings at the pump this Memorial Day weekend, experts said.  "Motorists this year are facing rising gas prices heading into the Memorial Day holiday," said Michael Green, a AAA spokesman, adding that Memorial Day 2013 would probably be the most expensive since 2011.
