I thought the same thing...it would be nice to recognize the students, their acconplichments and…Read More their schools in the Patch.

After reading these comments, I asked the chamber for a list of the students. I've added their…Read More names, schools and accomplishments to the story.

It was 1979 at Jesuit HS - Mr. Egan was our Social Studies Teacher. He bought the Pink Floyd record…Read More "The Wall" and must have really dug it. He set up a record player in the classroom and told us to lay our heads down while he played the record for a whole week! I actually remember some other students complaining about that... I thought it was the coolest thing a teacher ever did. He was a really deep thinking person and always engaged us on our essays about social issues, ecological problems, pollution, war. He told us the things about the environment and such that he felt strongly about. In retrospect, it was like a college class.
One day my friends and I were driving somewhere and saw Mr Egan getting out of his beat-up truck covered with bumper stickers.. He lived in a nice street, with manicured lawns all around, but his yard was cut but "natural" (aka weeds and sand). I was very impressed with that, that he walked the talk... to this day I have never sprayed my yard with pesticides and have no sprinkler system because of Mr Egan. Although we have lots of butterfly plants and a nice yard, the grass is "natural". I have as many bumper stickers on the back of my 12+ year old Prius as he had on his truck.
I have lost track of virtually everyone from those days, and I heard a few years ago that Mr Egan passed away. That is about all I know about him, but he was a big influence on me. I wonder if any Patch readers knew him? Thank you Mr Egan!!!!

I think that would be great. This is one reason the schools lost control. The parents should give…Read More permission for that at the beginning of the year and if they disagreed I would expel the student. These children are just out of control brats for the most part and they take up most of the teacher's time and no learning gets done. This is one reason Pinellas county schools are so poor that when the good students get into college they can;t even pass a entrance exam and need 2 years remedial courses. Paddle the brats or kick them out.

You hit an adult, it's assault. You hit a child, it's "discipline." This is truly…Read More sickening. It's not a lack of spanking that makes children unruly, it's a lack of boundaries and enforcing limits empathetically. There is NO need to ever hurt a child to "teach a lesson." Discipline means "to teach." Discipline does not mean "hit/spank/swat/paddle." Making children obey by instilling fear in them is evil and teaches nothing. Children are new on Earth and we must guide them and help them on this journey. If we all just continue to hit children...where do they end up?Violent, aggressive adults. The cycle continues. Home-schooled children rarely have behavioral problems, and if they do, it's because of other factors. Letting children create, imagine, have fun, and play leaves little room for unruliness. We must also look at diet. Most children in this country today eat nothing but JUNK. Artificial food dyes, unnatural sugars, preservatives...They are bound to express themselves in unflattering ways because the neurotransmitters in their brains are misfiring because of the chemicals in their bodies. I believe it's time we re-think everything.

Get the dope out of schools. There would be less problems. I have heard of kids selling drugs in…Read More middle and high school, and even students have told me there are needles in the bathrooms of the high school. Thankfully, my grand daughter is against drugs of any kind. She is disciplined at home, and has chores she has to do and maintain good grades which she does. I really don't see where paddling children will help with their behavior. I suppose they need to be sent to a special school if their behavior continues.
