Tampa Bay International Coastal Clean-Up Looking for More Volunteers

Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful is organizing volunteers to pick up litter at a variety of sites in Hillsborough County, including Riverhills and Hillsborough River State Park, on Sept. 17.

Non-profit Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful is looking for more volunteers to pick up trash at a variety of sites along the area’s river and lake coastlines. The non-profit coordinates the Hillsborough County effort to clean up coastlines as part of an International Coastal Clean-Up effort through the Ocean Conservancy taking place worldwide.

Volunteers of all ages are invited to come out for a few hours Sept. 17 to Riverhills Park or the Hillsborough State Park anytime from 8:30 a.m. to noon. All bags and equipment needed to do the work are provided.

Daisy Packer, environmental program coordinator with Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful, said registration is going well but there are still openings at all the sites. Last year, more than 4,600 volunteers collected litter.

“We’ve had a phenomenal response to our registration drive, and we’re expecting to set a new volunteer record,” Packer said.

All the garbage collected Sept. 17 will be recorded and published as data for the benefit of environmental policy makers on the local, state and national level. Last year, the No. 1 most common type of debris was the cigarette butt.
