The following six steps - or RECIPE for Success - can be applied by parents in dealing with their children at all stages in their growth and development, and especially as they approach and enter their teenage years.
Respect
Give children/youth the respect that we must accord to all people. Children/youth are full-fledged people and are deserving of all the respect and consideration as all adults.
Expectations
Always have high expectations for children/youth. If you believe they can do it, they will rise to the occasion.
Communicate
Communicate consistently and effectively with children/youth.
Independence
Give children/youth the independence to be thinkers and doers. Don’t always plan and do things for them.
Partnerships
Build strong partnerships between and among children/youth, their teachers and community-members & leaders. The children's/youth's connection to their school and the community are essential.
Empower
Empower your children/youth. They have seen you as a positive role model, now it is time for them to take charge of their lives. ☺ Your job is to guide them and to open their eyes to opportunities and to the potential that lies within them.
