Australian Jump Rope Team to Train at Rec Center

Team members will be in Temple Terrace July 28 and 29 before a tournament at the USF Sun Dome.

The Northbridge Skipping jump rope team from Sydney, Australia will train in Temple Terrace at the end of July in preparation for the ninth Rope Skipping World Championships in Tampa.

Eighteen boys and girls from Sydney will compete in the FISAC-IRSF World Youth Championships segment of the tournament, which takes place July 31 through Aug. 7 at the . The World Cup competition will take place. Aug. 7.

More than 1,200 participants from 21 countries will participate in the event, sanctioned by the Federation Internationale de Saut a la Corde (FISAC) – International Rope Skipping Federation.

The Northbridge skippers will train July 28 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and July 29 from 10 a.m. to noon at the . They have been invited to use the facility, and soak up some rays at the facility’s pools, at no charge, courtesy of the City of Temple Terrace.

As a competitive sport, jump rope offers a variety of individual and team events, showcasing agility, speed, endurance, strength, coordination and fitness, said Fiona McIntosh, chairwoman of Northbridge Skipping.

The Northbridge team is coached by Takashi Ogawa, a primary school teacher. Most of the teens on the Northbridge team have been skipping with Ogawa for many years, including 16-year-old Jeremy English, the 2012 Australian National Freestyle male champion, who has trained with Ogawa since 2003.
