Rec Supervisor Hopes to Reschedule Charity Basketball Tourney

Although Saturday's tournament was canceled, Recreation Supervisor Scott Andrews, wants to set up another one for October.

The 3-on-3 Charity Basketball Tournament that was supposed to take place on Aug. 6 at the ended up being canceled because of lack of participation.

Few people signed up, said Recreation Supervisor Scott Andrews, and more people seemed interested in a 5-on-5 full court tournament instead.

The tournament was supposed to benefit the Fisher House in Tampa, which is a private-public partnership that supports the families of those in the American military by providing “comfort homes” for local families during the soldier’s hospitalization.

The good news is that Andrews is looking to reschedule the tournament for some time in October.

“We definitely want to reschedule it,” he said. “We might do a flag football tournament soon, and then a basketball tournament at a later time since our flag football season starts soon at the Recreation Center.”

According to Andrews, the goal is to present the Fisher House a check for $1,000.

“The Fisher House is a great charity and 100 percent of all the money we raise will go directly into the charity, unlike some other charities,” he said.

“In rough economic times like this, we should all focus our attention on the people who have a greater need than us,” he added.

The cost of registration is $40 per team, and the winning team will receive a trophy and $25 off registration in the adult flag football league or basketball league, depending on the tournament.
