Former Berkeley Prep Grad Continues to Grab Accolades

Middle Tennessee State's center Colin Boss continues to gain recognition.

Former Berkeley Prep Buccaneer lineman  continues to capture headlines in his senior year at Middle Tennessee State University.

The Blue Raiders muddled through a 2-10 season, but Boss has emerged as one of the team’s top players.

He was recently named to first-team all-conference for the Sun Belt Conference. Boss was the only Blue Raider named to first team, and the third offensive lineman to garner first team honors since the team joined the Sun Belt Conference in 2001.

According to the team website, Boss was part of an offensive line that allowed the fewest sacks in the nation. Boss himself never allowed a sack and tallied 40 knockdowns. He had 27 career starts for MTSU.

“It’s exciting,” Boss said of his success. “It’s nice to know that people are acknowledging all of the hard work I put into this season.”

After the all-conference nod, Boss was nominated as a permanent team captain for the Blue Raiders.

“That was a big shock,” he said. “The O-line was the strength of the team, but I thought Mike or Brandon would get it; they were the more vocal ones on the team.”

Mike Williams is a senior offensive lineman from Jefferson High School in Tampa, and Brandon McLeroy is another senior lineman nominated to second-team all-conference.

“I just try to lead by example; it’s good to see that my teammates recognized that,” said Boss.

Boss has also been invited to attend the Battle of Florida All-Star Game. The event takes place Jan. 21 at Florida Atlantic University's stadium in Boca Raton. It pits an all-star team comprised of college seniors that went to high school in north Florida against seniors that went to high schools in south Florida. Legendary collegiate football coaches Bobby Bowden and Howard Schnellenberger will coach the respective teams.

“It will be fun to get out there and show I can compete against any level of competition,” Boss said.

Receiver and MTSU teammate Sancho McDonald of Booker T. Washington High School in Miami will be joining Boss on the south team.

All of this comes at a critical time for Boss. As a graduating senior, Boss needs an invite to the NFL Combine next February to have a shot at the next level.

He said he would not only like to take his shot at the NFL, he said it would be “a dream come true” to play professional football in Florida.
