Zachary Salazar is ‘Terrace Star’

The Brooks-DeBartolo student received the recognition June 18.

Zachary Salazar is a role model at Brooks-DeBartolo Collegiate High School.

That’s according to Kristine Bennett, principal of the school, who also said the 11th-grader has stellar academic performance, citizenship and integrity.

Zachary is the latest Temple Terrace student to be recognized as a “Terrace Star,” a program that acknowledges local kids for academic achievement. Local schools are encouraged to nominate kids who stand out academically for the award, and each recipient is publicly recognized at a City Council meeting and given a certificate.

“I want to thank my parents and the school for all the opportunities that they give me,” Zachary said when he received the award June 18. “It wouldn’t be possible without them.”

As part of the nomination process, Doris Ripoll, Zachary’s Advanced Placement Language/Composition teacher, wrote a letter to Temple Terrace Mayor Frank Chillura.

“During his high school career at BDCHS, Zachary has consistently excelled academically, and his personal conduct, respect for self and others, community involvement and sense of responsibility are exemplary,” Ripoll wrote. “His honesty, spotless reputation and open-mindedness result in his being trusted by the entire student body.”

Zachary is ranked first in his class; is taking honors, advanced placement and dual enrollment classes; is president of the National Junior Honor Society; and participates in extracurricular activities, including varsity lacrosse at Wharton High School.

“I’m glad to know that there’s leaders like you out there setting examples for the kids every day,” Chillura told Zachary.
