Terrace Community Middle Receives $2,500 Grant

The school will use the money from Liberty Mutual Insurance to buy new sports equipment and expand its athletic program.

From Liberty Mutual Insurance:

Youth sports organizations and schools appreciate every penny when it comes to shoestring athletic budgets.

For many organizations, a lack of funding has resulted in poorly-maintained facilities, aged and possibly unsafe equipment, or insufficient resources to enable all families to participate. To address this local need, Liberty Mutual Insurance created the Responsible Sports grants program with Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) in 2007, offering organizations and school athletic programs the opportunity to earn money by championing a community-wide commitment to sportsmanship and responsibility in youth sports.

Liberty Mutual Insurance has announced that Terrace Community Middle School is one of 15 youth sports organizations and schools around the nation that has earned a $2,500 grant, which the school says will be put toward purchasing equipment and expanding its Tornadoes sports program.

Terrace Community Middle School successfully rallied its community to participate in an online course on mentoring and responsibility in youth sports for coaches and parents at ResponsibleSports.com. Each course completion earned a credit for the Tornadoes, enabling them to have among the highest levels of participation based on population size to receive the grant.

“In communities across the country, schools and youth sports programs are constantly feeling the financial strains of budget limitations, and as a result, must find alternative resources to provide meaningful experiences for youth athletes,” said Carol Ford, a sales representative in Liberty Mutual’s Tampa office. “Terrace Community Middle School has shown the commitment and dedication to the ideals promoted through youth sports, which is why today we award them much-needed funding that will help them continue to provide responsible sports environments for Hillsborough County kids.”

Terrace Community Middle School is among an elite group of 15 youth sports organizations and schools across the country that completed enough quizzes to earn the grant. Twice a year, Liberty Mutual Responsible Sports awards $2,500 grants for youth sports associations, clubs and school sports programs. The Responsible Sports Program is a partnership between Liberty Mutual, Positive Coaching Alliance, and a number of national youth sport organizations.

“The Tornadoes are so excited that our community was able to help them earn such a distinguished honor,” said Lori Johnson, physical education and health instructor at Terrace Community Middle School. “This grant will help us expand our sports program, and help us continue to provide an exceptional environment for our students to thrive.”

Liberty Mutual Insurance now has awarded more than $500,000 in Responsible Sports funding to more than 150 organizations and schools since 2007. Liberty Mutual will make another round of 15 grants available this fall with youth sports groups eligible to compete for $2,500 in funding beginning Sept. 1.
