District Honors King Students for Reading Competition

Five students were recognized for their efforts in the 2012 Reading Rumble.

From Sara Smith, King High School:

Five King High School students were honored on Sept. 19 at the Hillsborough County public school district office in downtown Tampa for winning first place in the 2012 Reading Rumble District competition.

Reading Rumble is the high school equivalent of the elementary and middle schools’ Battle of the Books competition with the biggest difference being the use of Team Read books instead of the Sunshine State books.

The goal of Reading Rumble is “to entice teens to read... in order to engage their interest and to provide a spur to critical thinking,” according to the Hillsborough County Department of Library and Media Services’ website.

Twenty four schools sent teams to the event. The students had to make it through two regular rounds, and then a final four round. Eleventh-graders Linda Lin, Jamie Schweiberger and Sarah Noblitt, and 10th-graders Jesse Huang and Sudha Dhulipala were the members of the winning KHS team.

Jamie Schweiberger coveted the win, remembering the past year’s poor performance.

“We got last place, so getting first this year was great,” she said. “[Participating in Reading Rumbles] looks good on college applications, and the books were interesting.”

The team enjoyed being honored.

“I got a trophy,” said Schweiberger, “but my favorite part was seeing all the other schools. It was fun.”
