Brothers Bring Home Honors from Science Fairs

The three Glow brothers share a passion for science.

From fall through winter, you're likely to find one science experiment or another going on in the Glow family's Temple Terrace home.

The three Glow brothers -- Samuel, Benjamin and Joshua -- share a common love of science and a passion for competing in the county and state science fairs.

"The projects usually begin with questions and discussions at the dinner table and evolve into areas of research and finding out what else they can investigate," said their mother, Sherrie.

Their dedication paid off in triplicate when all three brothers walked away with awards at this year's Hillsborough Regional Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Fair.

Samuel, the youngest, a student at Lewis Elementary School, explored what insects are edible and their nutritional value, earning a second place in the third-grade life science division.

Benjamin, a student in Greco Middle School's STEM program, was awarded first place in junior biochemistry in the Hillsborough Regional STEM Fair and second place at the Florida State Science and Engineering Fair.

His project was a second-year study focusing on nutritional comparisons of naturally raised versus standard raised beef with fodder from both types of feed lots.

In the meantime, Joshua, a sophomore in King High School's International Baccalaureate program, focused on the de-nitrification of different agricultural plants in an aquaponics system.

His inspiration came from his Advanced Placement Environmental Science class as well as guidance and mentoring from University of South Florida Professor Philip Reeder and Joshua Sakmar, a biologist with Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission.

Joshua placed second at the Hillsborough Regional STEM Fair and fourth at the Florida State Science and Engineering Fair.
