USF Students Face Tuition Hike

Hitting the books at the University of South Florida and other state schools is likely to cost more next year.

When Gov. Rick Scott signed the state’s $70.8 billion budget yesterday, he left in a 5 percent tuition hike for USF and other state schools.

How much this will translate to for students has yet to be decided.

According to WUSF News, USF President Judy Genshaft said the school’s budget can’t be finalized just yet.

“Students' tuition for next school year won't be known until the Board of Governors and USF's Board of Trustees weigh in,” WUSF News reports.

How will the tuition hikes hit your budget?

Overall the budget is a mixed bag for USF with some projects, such as the USF Heart Health Institute, receiving funding and others getting cut from the mix. 

Even so, the cuts are less than the faced earlier this year.

For her part in fighting the cuts, Genshaft was awarded with Hillsborough County's Ellsworth G. Simmons Good Government Award today, The Tampa Tribune reports. The award is given to people who fight against bad government policies.

Genshaft rallied thousands to support USF in its bid to reduce the amount of the cuts. Temple Terrace residents even to oppose the loss of funding.
