Temple Terrace Veterans Day Closings

Most government offices and schools will be closed Monday, Nov. 12 in observance of the Veterans Day holiday.

Veterans Day is just around the corner, and that means Temple Terrace residents should be prepared for a number of closings around town and throughout Hillsborough County.

While the holiday falls on Sunday, Nov. 11, it’s officially observed on Monday, Nov. 12. Veterans Day is a federal holiday, which means mail service won’t run and most government offices will be closed.

Here’s a rundown of what's open and what's closed on Veterans Day in Hillsborough County:

The Hillsborough County school district does observe Veterans Day on Nov. 12. That means the kids here don’t have to hit the books.

City of Temple Terrace and Hillsborough County Closings

Temple Terrace City Hall, Temple Terrace Public Library and Lightfoot Recreation Center will be closed. So will the county’s administrative offices, neighborhood service centers, libraries, Head Start facilities, recreation centers, nutrition sites and senior centers.

In the city, there will be no residential trash pickup or curbside recycling Monday. Commercial garbage pickup will not be affected by the holiday.

In the county, residents worried the holiday will interrupt their trash pickup services can relax. The county’s solid waste collection services will run as normal on Nov. 12. This includes garbage, yard waste and recyclable pickups for unincorporated Hillsborough.

The county’s landfills, community collection centers, transfer facilities and the Resource Recovery Facility are also open.

What’s Open on Monday?

While a lot of Temple Terrace city and Hillsborough County workers will get the day off on Monday, that’s not the case across the board. A few agencies will stay open, including the Temple Terrace Family Recreation Complex, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

City and county emergency services, such as police, fire and ambulance will also be available.

Hillsborough County Animals Services is planning a special promotion on Monday, Nov. 12. Dubbed Pets For Vets, the promotion runs from 11 a.m. 5 p.m. During this time, all active or retired military personnel will get half-off pricing for pet adoptions at the county’s 440 N. Falkenburg Road location.

The county’s regional parks are also open on Monday. They include Lettuce Lake, Lake Park, Aldermans Ford, Edward Medard, Flatwoods, Lithia Springs, Morris Bridge and Lake Rogers, among others.

Temple Terrace Veterans Day Events

On Sunday, Nov. 11, there will be a special celebration at Riverhills Park during the Temple Terrace Community Arts Festival.

Councilwoman Mary Jane Neale will be the guest speaker, according to a city press release. The King High Naval Junior ROTC will present the colors, and vocalist Cheri Tysver will sing. Complimentary cupcakes will be served.

On Monday, Nov. 12, the GFWC Temple Terrace Woman’s Club will have a Support Our Troops Card Game Day at Woodmont Clubhouse, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Participants can play Bridge, Canasta, Scrabble, Uno, Bunco, Phase 10 or any other card games; have a light lunch; and have fun with friends. The cost is $10.

Then, at 7:30 p.m., Florida College will host veteran, author and speaker J.D. Wetterling, a fighter pilot in Vietnam who will share personal accounts of the war. The event takes place at Puckett Auditorium and is free and open to the public.
