Public Works Teaches Kids About Recycling

Students at Temple Terrace Elementary School learned about recycling and Temple Terrace’s residential recycling program Thursday when Temple Terrace Public Works Deputy Director Ray LeBlanc and Sanitation Foreman Bert Clanton visited during the Great American Teach-In.

More than 100 students got to see a recycling truck in action and learned about all the household items that can be recycled.

More than 350 professionals were scheduled to visit schools throughout Hillsborough County during the annual Teach-In, according to the Hillsborough County school district. Volunteer speakers included active members and veterans of the United States Armed Forces; police, firefighters and paramedics; and animal trainers, attorneys, business professionals, chefs, elected officials, entrepreneurs, musicians, and school board members.

The Teach-In is presented annually by SERVE, the volunteer arm of the school district, and brings professionals and hobbyists into local schools to demonstrate to children the benefits of getting a good education.

Temple Terrace has one of the most successful residential recycling programs in the Tampa Bay area, LeBlanc said in a City of Temple Terrace press release. The city recycles more than 1,500 tons of material annually.

“We really do have a good recycling program,” he said. “Community involvement is the key. There’s a lot of community involvement, a lot of participation.”
