Fletcher Avenue Gridlock Likely to Continue

Despite a $2 million study, Hillsborough County is unlikely to obtain the funding needed to expand this roadway from four to six lanes.

Temple Terrace area commuters tired of congestion on Fletcher Avenue won’t see relief any time soon.

According to the Tampa Bay Times, Hillsborough County officials aren’t confident they’ll be able to foot the estimated $75 million to $110 million bill needed to expand the roadway from four to six lanes.

This is despite a $2 million traffic study that shows the road that connects the interstates and provides access to Moffitt Cancer Center and the University of South Florida is severely overworked. That study, the Times reported, reveals that Fletcher plays host to about 40,000 vehicles a day.

County officials say a Fletcher widening project doesn’t necessarily qualify for federal funding. The county itself would have trouble funding the project due to a reduction in revenue for Community Investment Tax spending. This half-cent tax helps fund road projects in the county, among other things.
