Expect Controlled Burns at Flatwoods Park

The Southwest Florida Water Management District is planning to burn sections of the park, which is located just north of Temple Terrace.

If you see smoke just north of Temple Terrace this month and next, don’t be alarmed.

The Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) will be performing controlled burns at Flatwoods Park in August and September.

According to a SWFWMD press release, about 200 acres of land will be burned in small, manageable sections as part of routine maintenance.

These types of burns mimic natural fires in a controlled situation, said Kevin W. Love, district land manager. The burns lessen the risk of uncontrolled wildfires and enhance natural conditions by maintaining the ecological and wildlife habitat values.

During the burns, some entrances or trails at Flatwoods may be temporarily closed on weekdays to keep everyone safe. The entrance at 13630 Morris Bridge Road may be closed temporarily when conditions allow SWFWMD to burn on the east side of the park. In that case, visitors can access Flatwoods at the Bruce B. Downs Boulevard entrance.

Every effort will be made to ensure that smoke will not affect homes or highways, the press release states. However, motorists should be cautious because the smoke can lead to reduced visibility on nearby roads.

Prescribed burns are only conducted during the right weather conditions.
