Security Heightened at King High

The Hillsborough school district has extra security at the school today even though it doesn't believe anything out of the ordinary will happen.

According to Steve Hegarty, the Hillsborough County public school district’s communications officer, the district has stepped up security at King even though it has no reason to believe there would be any repercussions at the school today.

“We think it was probably wrapped up last night,” Hegarty said.

According to a press release from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, three teenage boys were planning to target one student off campus. They —at least one of them a King student—yesterday after receiving information about the possible shooting plot.

Hegarty said someone went to the school’s resource deputy and shared concerns about what might happen.

“If anybody has a concern or hears a rumor, we check into it,” Hegarty said.

Acting on the tip, deputies pulled over a 2003 white Hyundai around 2 p.m. yesterday. The car was stopped at 6906 N. 56 St., the release said.

The three teens were detained and two guns were found inside the car. Deputies found a .22 caliber handgun in the back seat and a Rossi .38 handgun under the front passenger’s seat, the release said.

Arrested were Darius Anthony Fuches, 19, of 9861 Morris Glen in Tampa, and Marquez D-Magio O'Quendo, 18, of 8005 Peach Drive in Temple Terrace. A 15-year-old boy was also arrested and taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center. O'Quendo is a senior at King, the release said.
