Gas Leak Closes Area Near Hillsborough, 56th

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is evacuating the area.

Temple Terrace motorists trying to make their way home along Hillsborough Avenue near 56th Street are going to want to take another route.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, the immediate area is being evacuated and the streets are currently shut off to traffic due to an eruption in a natural gas line.

Debbie Carter, the sheriff's office's spokeswoman, issued the alert at 4:11 p.m. today, Dec. 16.

Roads currently closed include:

  • 56 Street is closed in both directions from Hanna to Hillsborough Avenue
  • Hillsborough is closed in both directions at 56 street to 59th street

Hillsborough County Fire and Tampa Electric Co. employees are on the scene.

Carter is unsure how long it will take to repair the leak. Motorists are being asked to take alternative routes.
