From the City of Temple Terrace:

What’s fun, educational and way cool for kids?

The free event takes place in recognition of National Fire Prevention Month each October and is put on in conjunction with Temple Terrace Reads, a family literacy festival adjacent to the fire station, in front of Temple Terrace Elementary School (9 a.m.-1 p.m.).

The fire department’s open house focuses on fire prevention and safety, but it’s also a lot of fun. There will be interactive exhibits and plenty of firefighting equipment on hand, including ladder trucks, pumpers and rescue vehicles.

Youngsters will experience what it’s like to be a firefighter, putting out simulated house fires with water hoses. They’ll save a barn from burning down and learn how to safely escape a smoke-filled room.

Firefighters will set simulated residences on fire at noon to demonstrate the effectiveness and importance of sprinklers in a residential setting. Then they’ll jump into action at 12:30 p.m. for an exciting vehicle-extrication demonstration.

The Temple Terrace Police Department will be there, too, with its popular Bike Rodeo for kids. Temple Terrace Lodge 330 F&AM will conduct a free Masonic Child ID Program, and TECO will bring its “Power City” exhibit. There also will be puppet shows, a balloon artist and other entertainment. Hot dogs, sodas and chips will be sold at reasonable prices.

Participating agencies at this year’s event include the Temple Terrace Fire Department, Temple Terrace Police Department, Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, Tampa Fire Rescue and Plant City Fire Rescue. Sponsors include Tampa Electric Co., Dunkin Donuts, Florida Fire Sprinkler Association, Sears, and Langston’s Auto, along with Publix and Sweetbay supermarkets. Volunteers include Florida Hospital, the GFWC Temple Terrace Woman’s Club and others.
