FHP Checkpoint Locations Released

Troopers will be on the lookout for defective vehicles and improperly licensed drivers throughout Hillsborough County.

Putting off getting that headlight fixed or your driver’s license renewed?

You might want to rethink that strategy.

The Florida Highway Patrol will be on the lookout throughout the month of April for vehicles that have safety equipment defects and drivers who are behind the wheel without valid licenses.

According to FHP spokesman Sgt. Steve Gaskins, the checkpoints will take place throughout Hillsborough County and include a number of roads in the Temple Terrace area.

“Recognizing the danger presented to the public by defective vehicle equipment, troopers will concentrate their efforts on vehicles being operated with defects such as bad brakes, worn tires and defective lighting equipment,” Gaskins wrote in a media release. “In addition, attention will be directed to drivers who would violate the driver license laws of Florida.”

Gaskins did not release a timetable for the checkpoints in the Temple Terrace area.

The list of checkpoints includes “possible locations (where) checkpoints may be conducted,” he said. “Hours may vary.”

Here is the list of roads FHP may target in the Temple Terrace area this month:

  • U.S. 301
  • State Road 580 (which includes Busch Boulevard)
  • State Road 582 (which includes Fowler Avenue)
  • State Road 583 (which includes North 56th Street)
  • County Road 582A (Fletcher Avenue)
  • County Road 581 (Bruce B. Downs Boulevard)
  • Davis Road
  • Harney Road

Why do they post the locations? Just doesn't make sense.

Hi Lucinda, according to Sgt. Gaskins, they are required by case law to release the locations where they "may" conduct checkpoints. It doesn't mean they will hit every road publicized and they don't have to give the dates and times.

We used to have a Circuit city on Fowler along with a real nice book store, then the pressure of being so close to suitcase city forced them all to close or move to New Tampa. It's real sad, I feel I speak for most of us In saying we need a good variety of businesses local to Temple Terrace to shop at.
