With the one-year anniversary of his death approaching, friends and family are organizing an event they hope will keep alive Agana's legacy as a Plant High alum and University of South Florida student.

"Michael's March" will take place on April 21 at USF at MLK Plaza, 4202 Fowler Avenue, according to Eric Peer, whose brother was close friends with Agana.

The three-mile march will include live music, a T-shirt and a medal for participants to wear, Peer said, with the goal of having the event annually. Organizers are also hoping the event helps raise money to kick start a USF scholarship in honor of Agana, Peer said, who was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity.

"Michael’s March was born out of the importance to remember a loved one and the need to move forward while still remembering the past," read an excerpt from a press release about the march.

Agana grew up playing hockey with Peer's brother, Bijan Barrera.

"He had a great impact on everybody he met," Barrera said. "Everybody knew Michael. If you didn't know him personally, you heard his name."

Peer said Agana's family is slowly healing after the loss of their son.

“It finally seems like they are starting to move forward," he said. "It hasn’t been a year. I think they're embarrassed. But I hope with this, they can turn the corner and live their lives the way they were meant to be lived.”

You can register for the event by going to the registration website. For more information on donating of volunteering at the event, call 813-775-5667 and ask for Rob. Bijan Barrera and Parker Armstrong are the event's hosts.
