Mayor Chillura: Relay for Life is Special to Temple Terrace

Mayor Frank Chillura talks about the importance of the 11th annual event in the community.

Many people in Temple Terrace know others who have been affected by cancer.

That's according to Temple Terrace Mayor Frank Chillura, who spoke during the opening ceremonies at the community's 11th annual Relay for Life April 26.

"This year, 1.6 million people will be diagnosed with cancer," he said.

Chillura said he lost his uncle to cancer in 2004, and his father is a cancer survivor. A good friend of his was diagnosed with cancer in 2011 and beat it. But the cancer came back in 2012.

"At the beginning of the year—2013—he went through treatment, and we were all there for him—all of us, even the community. He's a Temple Terrace resident," Chillura said. "... and on May 15, he's going to find out the results. So we will stay strong with him, and we will pray for him."
