Ed Taylor Construction completes office renovation for Department of Environmental Protection

Renovation required coordination and collaboration

Tampa, Fla. (July 2, 2014) – Ed Taylor Construction recently finished a comprehensive interior office renovation for the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), as part of an effort to create a more efficient space.

“As a government agency, we are always looking for ways to use taxpayer money more effectively,” said Mary Yeargan, director of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Southwest District. “We determined one way we could do that was to consolidate our footprint with a smaller office space."

Ed Taylor completely renovated the interior of the building and reduced the DEP office, located at Telecom Park in Temple Terrace, from 56,000 square feet to 36,000 square feet. This was accomplished by constructing a wall so the owner could lease out the remaining part of the building, combining two break rooms into one space and reconfiguring cubicle sections to be more user-friendly for staff.

The office was fully occupied during the renovation, so coordination between Ed Taylor and the DEP was required to ensure adequate workspace for employees during the project. Ed Taylor also had to maintain the building’s function as a public building during renovations. With trainings and other events scheduled, advance planning and flexibility was required so construction would not be disruptive to the events.

Due to the building’s layout, the renovations were completed in four phases. Each phase called for moving large blocks of people, furniture and equipment all while ensuring DEP employees could resume work as usual. Through planning meetings with the landlord and tenant and coordinating with movers, furniture vendors and subcontractors, Ed Taylor was able to relocate everyone and fully renovate the office to create a more efficient space for DEP.

“Every interior project brings its own set of challenges, which we pride ourselves in being able to overcome,” said Mark Weaver, vice president of Ed Taylor Construction. “Occupied remodels, particularly with multiple phases, are our biggest challenge as a general contractor. This project’s success was a direct result of our project superintendent Mike Albritton, the landlord’s rep Mike Biddle and DEP’s Mike Zavosky working so well together to minimize disruptions and provide a safe and clean work space for the DEP as we moved people around.”
