Why Café Kili Isn't Worried About the New Dunkin' Donuts

Co-owner Patrick Waruinge said he thinks his customers will remain loyal.

Look out of the front window of the new Dunkin’ Donuts/Baskin Robbins on Fowler Avenue, and you’ll see shops in the Terrace Walk plaza, including Cafe Kili.

The family-owned coffee shop with Kenyan roots is located almost directly across the street. Much like Dunkin’ Donuts, it sells coffee, tea, smoothies, bagels, muffins and sandwiches.

Although Dunkin’ Donuts could be considered direct competition for the small business, co-owner Patrick Waruinge said he thinks Café Kili customers will remain loyal.

Café Kili isn’t just a coffee shop; it’s also a community hub that offers meeting space, live music and open mic nights. Business owners meet there to share ideas, and friends gather to talk about events of the day.

“They have their niche; we have ours,” said Waruinge, who owns Café Kili with his wife, Rose Waruinge. “I am not worried.”
