Busch Gardens Names Baby Rhino Jasiri

Facebook users chose the name out of four possibilities.

A baby female white rhinoceros born a few weeks ago at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay has been named Jasiri, which means brave and bold in Swahili.

Facebook users chose the name out of four possibilities by voting on the Busch Gardens Tampa Bay Facebook page.

“And now we announce the winning name in the Poll.... You, our Facebook Fans, named the baby rhino Jasiri,” a Thursday post on the Busch Gardens Facebook read. “Thank you to all of you who voted and stay tuned to this page for more cute animal baby photos.”

Other name choices and their Swahili meanings included:

  • Bahati, which means luck or success;
  • Safiri, which means traveler; and
  • Saba, which refers to the baby being the seventh white rhino born at Busch Gardens.

Jasiri was born Oct. 23 on the park’s 26-acre white rhino habitat on the “Serengeti Plain.” She is the second calf born to mother Kisiri and the seventh calf born to father Tambo, according to a Busch Gardens press release.

She weighed an estimated 140 pounds at the time of the birth and will gain approximately four pounds each day until she reaches an adult weight of approximately 3,500 to 4,000 pounds.
