Masque Community Theatre's 'Cinderella' Opens July 29

Rodgers and Hammerstein's three-act musical features favorites such as "The Prince Is Giving a Ball," "Ten Minutes Ago," and "Do I Love You Because You Are Beautiful?"

Almost everyone is familiar with the timeless story of Cinderella, in which the unsuspecting girl surprisingly wins over the charming prince’s heart and all of her dreams come true.

“The story is just something anyone of any age can relate to,” said Ruth Kegel, who is directing the upcoming production of “Cinderella” for . “I think the enjoyable part of this production is the music and everyone really enjoys the humor of the stepsisters.”

Masque Community Theatre is presenting Rodgers and Hammerstein’s take on the classic fairytale, which will open July 29. The production features more than 50 actors and can be seen through August. Because of the size of the production, it will be performed at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, located at 5340 Primrose Lake Circle. It will be showing on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m.

“Everyone already knows the story of Cinderella,” Kegel said. “However, this is not the Disney version that everyone is used to.”

“Cinderella” is this year’s summer youth production, an annual event for the theater. Kegel, who has been involved with other summer youth productions, said she enjoys working with the younger actors the most.

“I like working with them, and I enjoy teaching them and seeing their progress,” she said. “It is more than just a recital—it is a production, which means the younger kids are learning all aspects of putting a production together, from backstage to on- and off-stage things.”

According to Kegel, the summer youth productions also offer the younger actors the chance to remain active in theatre while school is not in session.

“Some of these kids are already involved with thespian activities in school, and it is good for them to have a supplement while school is not in session,” she said.

Temple Terrace resident Victoria Beaudoin, 15, is participating in her first production with Masque Community Theatre and is one of the actresses who plays Cinderella (as some of the roles are double and triple casted). She said she thinks the production’s musical numbers are what make it stand out from any other versions.

“Rodgers and Hammerstein just did and amazing job writing these songs,” she said. “The lyrics are just timeless; they just added to an already amazing story.”
