There's Still Time to Participate in Relay for Life

Temple Terrace's 11th annual event will take place April 26-27.

Last year, Relay for Life celebrated its first decade in Temple Terrace. Now, Jamie Klingman is ready to lead the 11th annual event.

“I wanted to be the chairperson this year so that I could help Relay start off its second decade of fighting back against cancer in Temple Terrace,” Klingman said.

The 2013 Relay for Life Temple Terrace is set for April 26-27 at Greco Middle School. The event begins at 6 p.m. April 26 and ends at noon April 27.

Relay for Life events take place annually across the country. Each one sees cancer survivors, family and friends organizing teams to fight cancer one step at a time. Team members take turns running or walking around a track, and each team must always have at least one member participating throughout the night.

“Our theme is Curing Cancer Around the World, with each team picking a country to represent,” Klingman said.

The 18-hour event kicks off with an opening ceremony that will celebrate cancer survivors. A luminaria ceremony will take place at 9 p.m. During the observance, sand-mounted candles in small paper bags are lighted in honor of family members and friends lost to cancer.

Klingman said there won’t be a Voice of Temple Terrace competition this year, but she promised there would be plenty of entertainment and activities throughout the night.

“Cancer never sleeps, so neither will we,” she said.

There are 33 teams signed up to participate, and there’s still time to sign up.

“People can also just come as an individual, or we'll help them join a team,” Klingman said.

Teams have raised about $45,000 so far, she said, and the goal is to get to $100,000. The money will be used by the American Cancer Society to fund research and education as well as promote advocacy.

“I am excited for us to find a cure!” Klingman said.
