Resident Remembers Temple Terrace Teen Town

Karen Howell was a teenager in the late 1950s.

Karen Howell was a teenager when her family moved to Temple Terrace in 1956.

"It was such an innocent time," she remembered of her teenage years, visiting Temple Terrace Teen Town and volunteering at the , which was housed with City Hall at what was Club Morocco in the 1920s and is now the Student Center.

Howell went to the Temple Terrace Library April 13 when the Tampa-Hillsborough Public Library System's Library History Road Show was in town for the .

Howell brought with her a newspaper clipping from 1961 of a picture of her and a friend headed into the library. She also brought her Temple Terrace Teen Town identification dated Aug. 4, 1958.

She explained that Teen Town was a gathering of local teenagers at the old Club Morocco building. Teens would buy sodas and snacks, enjoy music and hang out.

"We would just dance to records," Howell said.
