Contestants can sing any genre of music and perform with background tracks, accompany themselves on guitar or keyboards, or have their own accompanists. Contestants can be amateur or working professional singers, but they can’t be signed to record labels or in management contracts. No bands are allowed.

Each of the 12 contestants will get 90 seconds to sing and impress the judges, who will be facing the opposite direction. If a judge likes what he or she hears, that judge will turn to face the contestant. Each judge can choose up to four contestants, and then narrow their choices to two contestants.

The final six singers will each perform a song, and then be critiqued by the judges. Relay attendees will vote for their favorites by donating money to Relay on behalf of a contestant before and during the competition.

The top contestant will win a two-hour recording session at Morrisound Recording. Two others, who will be chosen by the judges based on talent, will each win two-hour recording sessions at Redroom Recorders and Atomic Audio Recording.

“The (initial) 12 will be selected based on a live and/or tape audition,” Donohue said.
