University Corporation Funds Adult Ed Scholarships

The University Area Community Development Corporation donated $2,500 to Hillsborough County Public Schools Adult Education May 18.

If you’re trying to come up with the $50 to enroll in a General Educational Development (GED) program, you might be eligible for a scholarship that will take care of that cost for you.

Thanks to a donation from the University Area Community Development Corporation Inc. (UACDC), Hillsborough County Public Schools Adult Education has created a scholarship program to cover the costs of GED classes for 50 University Area Community residents.

Dan Jurman, UACDC executive director and chief executive officer, presented a $2,500 check to Mark Hutek, director of Adult Education for Hillsborough County Public Schools and UACDC board member, on May 18.

Low-income residents of the University Area Community often must save for months in order to come up with the $50 GED program cost, according to a press release from the UACDC. As a GED program location, the UACDC is dedicated to giving residents an opportunity to earn a living for themselves and break free from poverty.

Scholarship applications and eligibility criteria are available at the University Area Community Center. The Hillsborough County Adult Education department will award the scholarships to residents meeting the requirements on a first-come, first-served basis, the release states.
