Teen Dies After Incident at Recreation Complex
A 15-year-old boy has died following a party at a Temple Terrace pool Friday night.
A 15-year-old boy who was pulled from the water Friday night during a pool party at the Temple Terrace Family Recreation Complex has died, according to a press release from the City of Temple Terrace.
Jessie Shillingford of Tampa had been pulled from the facility’s swimming pool by the time the Temple Terrace Police Department arrived, according to an earlier press release issued by the city. Lifeguards were performing cardio-pulmonary resuscitation. It is unknown how long Shillingford was under water.
“Temple Terrace police received a report from the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner’s Office on Tuesday,” according to the new release issued today (Sept. 25). “The medical examiner’s Initial Case Summary lists the cause of death as ‘drowning’ and the manner of death as ‘accidental.’”
Shillingford was transported to Florida Hospital Tampa Friday. He remained on life support until early Tuesday morning, authorities said in the release.
The facility was being rented by the Pepin Academy of Tampa for a private party. An estimated 130 to 150 teachers, parents and kids were in attendance, according to Parks & Recreation personnel, the release states. Several lifeguards were on duty, recreation officials said.

This is a terrible tragedy and my heart goes out to the victim's family and friend. Please know you are in our prayers. While I do not know the circumstances surrounding this incident and I understand sometimes accidents just happen, I can say that whenever I am at the TTRC pool, the lifeguards seem extremely lax in their responsibilities. I pray now that this awful incident will serve as a wake up call to the TTRC administration that lifeguard duties need to be taken very seriously.

JD333 I think you are being overly critical of the lifeguards without knowing the whole story. my experience with the TT lifeguards has always been pleasant. REmember this is new and just unfolding. Its serves no purpose to start pointing fingers. I am sure the attorneys will do this for you.
