Scott’s Education Plan: PR Stunt or the Real Deal?

As Florida Gov. Rick Scott calls on state legislators to increase funding for school by $1.2 billion some are skeptical about his intentions. We’d like to get your take on the governor’s proposals, Tampa Bay.

Florida school districts that have struggled with multi-million-dollar budget cuts and teachers who’ve gone years sans raises are being offered some hope courtesy of Florida’s Republican governor.

Rick Scott is calling on the state’s legislature to approve a budget that includes an extra $1.2 billion in funding for public schools. Some of that money would help fund across-the-board raises of $2,500 for the state’s teachers. The overall plan would also boost per-student funding by about 6.5 percent, according to TBO.com.

"Investing in our teachers and in our education system is the key to our state's continued economic growth," Scott said in the TBO piece. "We made the hard choices to recover and get back on track — now we must make the smart choices to invest in Florida's future."

Scott’s plan, however, has some people raising their eyebrows. Just two years ago, he recommended cutting education funding. Now he’s stepping forward with an olive branch.

Hillsborough County School Board chairwoman April Griffin is among the nonbelievers, according to The Huffington Post.

"I really think this is a ploy on our governor's part to try to bring up his dismal approval rating," the Post quoted Griffin as saying. “We've seen our governor's agenda for the past four years, so pardon us if we are a tad bit skeptical.

“It has not been public-school friendly.”

Whether the governor’s proposal will make it through the Republican-controlled legislature is also in doubt. What is clear, however, is that Scott is up for reelection in 2014 and his approval numbers are anything but stellar. In fact, a recent poll shows he’d lose to former Gov. Charlie Crist if Crist threw his name into the arena.

So, what do you think Tampa Bay? Is Gov. Scott truly trying to invest in Florida’s future or is this just a PR stunt? Does it matter if the end result is an increase in funding for education? Share your thoughts in the comments section.

Is it REALLY that hard to figure out? This is the same guy who went on a "listening tour," then ignored everything he heard and appointed a castoff from Indiana do carry out his plans--his original plans. This is "Throw-them-a-Scrap" Scott, and then I can go ahead and dismantle the government in favor of rich corporations and privatization. This CAN'T be a serious question.

If Gov. Scott does something the people do not support, they get mad. If he does something the people do support, its called a PR stunt. How about giving a little credit to the Governor for doing good things for the State of Florida. He has kept all or in the process of keeping all of the campaign promises he got elected on.

Gov. Scott is just trying to bribe teachers with taxpayer dollars in order to win the 2014 election. Gov. Scott is the country's most unpopular governor for good reason. He has been hostile to teachers and our public school system for years and now he wants to give teachers a big raise just before he runs for re-election. Teachers know that if Gov. Scott wins the next election, he will just return to his Tea Party philosophy of being hostile to public sector employees and will give more tax breaks and benefits to his rich corporate friends and political donors. Gov. Scott has zero chance of winning re-election in Florida and this bribe to teachers shows that he is starting to panic. Spending millions of his own dollars got him elected the first time, but throwing money at teachers just before the next election won't work this time.

Pathetic hypocrite. This man will do anything possible to raise his approval rating. How he won the election in 2010 is beyond me. Seriously, no one I know admits to voting for him! And why should they? It would be embarrassing to admit to voting for a felon who had to take the 5th several times when asked in court about stealing from Medicare. Recalling his campaign he had around 3 talking points that he repeated ad nauseum during every speech, during every debate.
His election in 2010 added to the country's view of how the voters in Florida demonstrate a lack of intelligence. (said as politely as possible)

Very much a PR stunt. As one of the most hated Governors in the past 50 years Tricky Ricky is quickly going down in flames. Conservative estimates show him losing reelection by 20+ points. He will do anything or say anything to try and fool you. This really should not come as a shock since we are talking about the man who led a medical company to be fined the largest dollar amount in US history for billing fraud. He is the poster child for the phrase, "if his lips are moving he's lying".

While I voted for Scott by default since I thought he was the lesser of the 2 crazies I think he has held his own. He had to do what was necessary to get Florida back on track and, even the the left can't and wont believe it......ITS WORKING! Now that he's focusing on education, which is what the libs always tout, they still are trying to find fault with him. You can't seem to win with you people. Jobs are coming back, housing is improving, and education is getting what is necessary to imrove. And no Charlie Christ would not win in an election....if that were the case he would have won 3 years ago when he ran as an independent!

The guy's been raping and pillaging education (why isn't anyone reporting on his misuse of the lottery funds?) and funding his cronies and their projects since he got elected. After the 2012 election, the republicans are worried so now he's pretending to care. If we're stupid enough to re-elect him, he'll take all that money away just like he did the first time. Some of us have a brain and will never forget. The rest of you are in trouble because we're taking back our country.

OK you guys enough against Gov Super Con (conservative or convict?) He got elected because the Tea Shirts put him above an intelligent well spoken and thoughtful Alex Sink whose only real negative was that she ran the largest and most hated bank in the state. Still she was never indicted for stealing millions in medicare funds nor did she make her money by selling 25 cent band aids for 25 bucks as did Gov Scooter. Scott along with his hospitals stole more money from you and me through overcharging than this supposed give away to education. Is this a preelection ploy? Why heavens no, he has never lied to us in the past has he?

At least it's not the UN-Choice plan that Jebby Bush proposed years ago that bankrupted our school system to begin with. If the teachers get raises, more power to them. If the school district gets more money, that's great. It would be nice to see teachers not have to buy their own copy machine paper and pencils for a change....I say, if he does it, so much the better for them.

Heaven forbid. He gave Obama the respect that a President deserves. He should have turned his head to that Kenyan SOB to keep favor of the sore loser right. Meantime, Scott is obviously the worst Governor in the United States & keeps his job only because Florida doesn't have a recall. When Scott, who creeps people out, runs against one of the most Charismatic, three card mote, politicians in Crist, people will vote more against Scott than for Crist, but Crist will win. Then again Sink can come out of nowhere & take it all. It is mostly about sending Scott packing. Not about Crist. It's about Scott being so disliked.

April Griffin, a Democrat, doesn't trust the governor...what a shock. The Messiah of the left Obama is the king of quid pro quo especially to the Unions who got him elected and campaigned more than anything else the last to years but let's not talk about that. The hate and intolerance that comes from the left for anyone who is not one of them always amazes me. By the way, how are those new economic and unemployment numbers working for you...oh that's right it's all Bush's fault.

Does April Griffin realize that Governor Scott has only been in office for two years. I guess she already has her mind made up on the remaining two. But take a look at the past two years.
In 2012, Florida rose to the #2 spot in CEO Magazine's top states for businesses, and Florida led the nation in the drop in unemployment over the past two years. After inheriting an unemployment rate that was approaching 12%, the latest report has Florida at just 8.1% unemployment and more than 202,000 new private sector jobs.

One of the Governor's signature accomplishments that has been recognized by financial experts around the country, has been to lower the state's debt by $2 billion. Since the end of Florida's 2010 budget year, state debt has plummeted from $28.2 billion to $26.2 billion. The debt dropped fastest during the last fiscal year, by $1.5 billion. Florida was rated top 3 for favorable business tax policies and fifth for the best state business tax climate.

In regard to education, Scott asked the legislature to provide $1 billion in new education funding, and include $32 million for reading initiatives. The budget was passed and signed into law last spring. His affordable degree challenge to develop bachelor's degree programs that cost students $10,000 or less has been accepted by 12 colleges throughout the state: In addition, Florida schools raised their ranking from 11th to 6th in the Quality Counts education report just out in January, scoring 100% in the categories of standards, school accountability, early childhood education and economy/workforce.
The Governor took control of a state that was badly hit by the economic recession but rolled up his sleeves and got to work.
It has not been an easy time for Floridians. I know many that lost their homes and jobs. It is a shame that the Teacher's union and some that are elected to School Boards aren't willing to count their blessings and gratefully accept a very generous pay raise from We The People.

It just goes to show how self-centered and fickle the citizens have become. Gov. Scott was elected because he promised fiscal sanity at a time when it seemed as though the economy of not only Florida, but the country and the entire world were going to collapse. So, he did exactly what he said he'd do, and now you can't stand it because you apparently didn't realize just how much a part of the problem YOU (we) were. Pathetic indeed.

Gov. Rick "Medicare Fraud" Scott is clearly the worst and most unpopular governor in the country. Gov. Scott was implicated in the biggest Medicare fraud case in US history and stepped down as CEO of Columbia/HCA after the hospital giant was fined $1.7 billion and found guilty of ripping off the Medicare system. Gov. Scott then financed his initial campaign for Governor largely with money he made through his Medicare Fraud. Now after years of showing hostility toward teachers, public schools, and public sector workers, Scott now wants to give teachers a big raise just before he starts to run for re-election. The people of Florida can see right through this political opportunist. Gov. Scott is still attempting to privatize public sector jobs in order to turn over these lucrative contracts to his wealthy corporate friends and political allies. Scott has been a disaster for Florida since his election. The mild economic turnaround that we see in Florida coincides with a national economic rebound that has nothing to do with Scott and would have happened anyway. Voters need to clean up the political mess in Tallahassee during the next election and remove Gov. Scott and all of his Tea Party supporters from office.

You simply can't admit that people like you are a huge part of that problem. You lot continue to talk about the medicare fraud garbage and accuse Gov Scott of being guilty of it himself...personally. I did not rely on Fox News or any main stream media for accurate reporting when making my choice. I actually have heard both men speak in person and if only based on that, the choice was clear. You and I don't have to agree on my feeling the President was far more qualified or worthy. I respect your choice but disagree with the manner in which you voice it. As for the Governor, I would sooner vote for a stack of bricks then vote for him. I feel he is a nothing but a shell game con man. In ans to Cricket, James. I don't speak for anyone else, but I voted for Obama because he passed health insurance legislation that will go down in American history as momentous as Medicare, Social Security, etc. He saved our country from economic disaster Republicanism brought upon us, he offered the most promise to break America away from the repressive moral structure of the hypocritical right, he wants to raise taxes on the Rich who have been raping the workers since this country began, & I hate Republican, over the top, nationalistic attitude that America is the Master Race. It smacks of the Fourth Reight. I also feel that there will be more freedoms for all Americans under Obama & he proved it in his support of Gay rights.. I also felt that he would have more common sense about Guns & he has proved that too. It has nothing to do with Race, except that he isn't a white supremist, like right wingnuts. I now like his managerial abilities since he out managed the big deal manager Romney in the swing states like he was taking him to school. His approval rating soars now because he is in tune with what America has evolved too.

I'm still more aware of reality than you are & I had the common sense to realize I was taking poison & now warn others of the danger. That doesn't diminish anything I said. Obama & liberalism is burying your right wing hypocrisy, no matter what I smoked at one time. I took acid in the 60s too. The only reason you don't understand how that increases awareness is because you just have no clue. It's like the Who said, "how can those that haven't seen light be enlightened?"
You seem to adhere to Conservative values. They are hypocritical because you people think freedom means free to be just like you & any deviation from your view is 'forbodden.'

I don't indulge in illegal drugs every day. I haven't taken any drug that is illegal in over 30 years. Spice is legal. I think it should be illegal, but it is legal. Also just because a drug is illegal doesn't mean it's worse. Look at alcohol being legal & pot being illegal. Pot is like a sacrament from God, & Alcohol is a poison. It isn't as deadly a poison as spice, but society would be a better place if alcohol use was eliminated. If pot becomes as accessible as alcohol, booze would almost vanish because it's such a vile drug. It is legal though. That shows what how much legal is a false criteria of value to the human spirit. I personally don't drink. I don't like being dumbed down. I would prefer to expand my mind. As Huxley said, "when the doors of perception are cleansed, all things are seen"
Actually, that's where the Doors took their name from.

I do care about the economy. My solution isn't the same as yours however. I believe
that if the Conservatives drop their 'if Obama proposed it, we MUST oppose it' attitude we can move forward & there would be no problem with th economy. The stock market is booming under Obama now, because they know the climate is right for economic growth. My employer is always hiring & giving raises as our retail stores have run a constant gain for over a year. Last I looked, General Motors, Chrysler, & Ford were still there. You people say we're weak on international defense, but there have been no 911s under OUR watch & Osama IS dead. I'm 67 next month & I still go out to work a 40 hour week EVERY week. Are you a parasite on social security? Just asking.

You say the truth hurts, but nothing you've said about me is truth. I am white, but I'm not a hypocrite, like most white people. It is racist for Whites to think they are the Master Race. Other races, especially Blacks, have just cause to hate the whites. White culture is the part of Amerika that is what makes us the ugly Americans. I'm not anti white race. I'm anti white race's value system & especially the over the top nationalism of the right.
This country only fought one war, in modern times against a Caucasian enemy. That was Germany. They thought they were the Master Race & wanted to rule the World.
We couldn't stand for that Crap!!
THAT'S OUR (f)'N JOB!!!!!

You're a draft-dodging, parasitic drug user who hates white people. That says enough for me. We know where each other stands now. I stand for freedom, the founding principles of the United States of America as well as opportunity AND responsibility for all people, regardless of race. You are a pathetic person, Mikey and one of the reasons I weep for our future.

I don't use drugs. I used to use drugs, so I'll give you that. I don't hate white people. Since you seem unable to comprehend the written word, I will again say that I have no problem with white people. My problem is White Amerikan culture that thinks all others are inferior. I too stand for Freedom. That's why I stood for the freedom to decide weather, or not Americans could choose for themselves weather they wanted to fight, kill, or be killed, or support the Freedom Fighters that were standing up to the Imperialistic Giant that was attempting to limit their Freedom to unify their country. I wasn't a draft dodger. I was a draft resister. What part of that I was trying to save American lives from dieing as pawns in a chess game to save US Capitalistic investments does your pea brain have trouble comprehending? I support the founding principles of this Country & We will make America conform to those principles regardless of race & unlike you I will fight to have it conform to those principles regarding sexual preference too. All Americans deserve the same rights, not just the ones you think are worthy. You keep calling me a parasite. Screw you. I've worked & paid taxes all my life. I could collect social security, but I still work for my pay full time. Weep all you want for our future. The Amerika you want is dead. America is rising out of the ashes.

Mirra-You have lost any credibility you might have had with your hate filled and racists postings. Notice none of your buddies on the left have your back? Hate is hate and there is no rationalizing it no matter what your sexual preferance is.Nobody likes angry and bitter old people.

Why do you mention my sexual preference? I said that America is free for all people of all sexual preferences because it is & people like you can't seem to see that. People like you show your bigotry when you assume that anyone who supports gays is probably gay. I am not gay. I feel that they have the right to marry the person of their choice, just like everyone else has that right.
I don't write any hate in my comments. I'm not mad either. I'm intense in answering your idiot assumptions you people jump to. Actually, I'm laughing at your idiocy in how you people respond. No one jumps top my back because I am left of Liberals & they too think I'm the lunatic fringe. I'm not bitter. I'm used to what has to be overcome & follow the words of Steven Stills who said that we must fight to change America, but if we can't do it with a smile on our face & peace in our hearts, then we don't have any right to do it at all, because that would mean we hadn't learned anything at all & we are supposed to be some kind of different.

A video I put up on Youtube myself a few years ago. It demonstrates my Patriotism toward making America a better country.

What I love about Scott, is that it gets all the extreme Right and extreme Left all worked up. Is Scott one of our better governors, not really. Is he one of worst governors, not really. He does a poor job with the government organizational structure, like most businessmen who enter a government executive post do. If you need proof of that see where our best businessmen who were Presidents in the 1900's did. I disagree with some decisions and agree with others. But he hasn't been as great as some on the extreme right would lead you to believe, and he hasn't been as bad as some of the extreme left would lead you to believe. But he does expose the real problem with this nation and it citizens. Were too divided on the topics that don't matter, to come together on the topics that do matter. This has been going on since the "Contract with America" in the late 1990's. So that means to Leftists it not Bushes fault, and to Rightists its not Obama's fault.

Michael D, you could not of stated it better! I think when people are elected they should drop the politics and be moderate considering all sides. Elected offices are voted on by all the people even if you voted against something. No one will ever be perfect but why did we and them sell out and stop at trying.
