Obama Endorses Gay Marriage, Do You?

Barack Obama has a history of presidential firsts.
He was the first black president elected in America. And now, according to The Huffington Post, he’s the first sitting president to declare support for same-sex marriage.
"I've always been adamant that gay and lesbian Americans should be treated fairly and equally," the post quotes Obama as saying.
How much of a political impact Obama’s action will have remains to be seen. Huffington Post reports that issue lies largely in the hands of states and the courts.

According to a press release from the Hillsborough County Republican Party, the group's chairman, Art Wood, had this to say:
“We understand that everything Mr. Obama is doing at this point, including his speeches, appearances and endorsements are a part of a calculated and timed strategy to enhance his re-election campaign.
“We think the issues of rising gas prices, a sluggish housing system and down-economy are all issues affecting Americans deeply and are being distracted with a strategic endorsement. Furthermore, we feel the issue is a state-by-state issue, rather than contributing further to growing federal government control.”

It doesn't take a genius to figure it out, nor the Republican Party to point it out. This announcement about a personal opinion Obama holds which he has little to no control makes the headlines crowding out the real issues.
The media, especially young media like the this, although the Patch is more local issue news, should be more discussing actual issues, like this:

Jesus said love your god and love your neighbor as yourself. Love is the basis for true religion. Gay marriage is about fairness and equality for people who love each other.

What if we had left other civil rights issues to the states or courts? I wouldn't be able to vote or eat lunch with my black neighbors at a lunch counter!

Don't for a minute think this is a state issue. Our Politicians that won't touch a potential career ending issue always leave it to the states to decide. Same sex marriage is legal in some states and won't be recognized in others, this will cause a human rights issue that the federal government will have to deal with. This will end up being about civil rights for the supreme court.
