Ask members of the Temple Terrace Community Garden group how their garden grows, and they’ll tell you that the secret is in the soil.

“One of the most important things for an organic garden is healthy soil,” said member Carla Perdomo. “Composting can help you achieve this, and it's a great way to cut down on curbside waste.”

Building on the success of their first workshop, Organic Gardening and Worms, group members will present their next event, Compost and Other Super Amendments to Feed Your Soil, on April 21, noon-1 p.m. at the Riverhills Park gazebo. It’s free and open to the public.

Family-owned Grace’s Hydro-Organic Garden Center will provide information on soil preparation and answer questions.

“A lot of people think that all they need is compost, but you also need a lot of additives,” said Jean Grace, whose husband, Steve, will lead session.

Grace said her family is excited to be part of the workshop and got involved with the effort through several Community Garden members who are also customers of Grace’s, which recently moved from the downtown redevelopment area to 8707 Temple Terrace Highway in the Point Plaza shopping center.

“We’re definitely looking forward to it,” Grace said of the session.

The workshop will begin with a demonstration on making fresh vegetable juice. Four group members will share their favorite recipes.

“Participants will get a sample of each recipe,” said Perdomo, who is coordinating the entire event.

Participants should consider bringing chairs, she added, as seating is limited in the gazebo.

“Residents should attend this event to meet neighbors, learn more about the community garden, and walk away with some great ideas,” Perdomo said.

Compost and other Super Amendments to Feed Your Soil is sponsored by Grace’s Hydro-Organic Garden Center, Temple Terrace Patch and the Temple Terrace Preservation Society.
