Kids Coax Hummingbird Back Outside
Katie and Stephanie Mohler helped the tiny creature that was stranded on their porch.
This week’s Sunday Community photos comes from Mike Mohler, who posted his pictures in Temple Terrace Pics & Clips, a neighborhood gallery where the entire Temple Terrace community can share photos and videos.
In an email, Mike wrote:
We had a small visitor on our screen porch the other morning, a tiny hummingbird that could not find his way off.
My daughters were very concerned and even though we left all the doors open he could not seem to find his way out. The girls knew hummingbirds have a very high metabolism so when he was still on the porch the following morning they knew they had to do something before it was too late.
We stopped by Ace Hardware and picked up a hummingbird feeder hoping he would feed. When the girls brought the feeder onto the porch he swooped in and began to feed.
As the hummingbird became more comfortable with the girls and the feeder they started moving closer to the screen door until he was free. He made a couple last trips to the feeder and then was off.
“We hung the feeder by the window and are hoping our guest returns,” Mike said.

Wow!!! That is super that you were able to save it. They have to eat all the time to maintain their energy, and I think a hummingbird might die pretty quickly if it could not get to food. You did a brilliant job getting a feeder. It must have been very hungry to take to it right away with people there. They are magical to watch.
