Get Free Money During Patch’s Summer Essentials Contest

We’re rolling out a five-week contest to help take the heat off your wallet.

Summer’s here and that means it’s time for vacations, barbecues, long, lazy days with the kids out of school and a wallet that keeps getting drained thanks to extra expenses.

Patch understands!

That’s why our 19 Florida sites are teaming up to help our readers out in the financing department.

Beginning today, we’re kicking off Patch’s Summer Essentials; a weekly contest where you can win cold, hard cash courtesy of us. To be eligible, just answer our weekly question and we’ll select one winner a week randomly from the comments that have been submitted. (See the fine print for details!)*

The contest will feature a variety of questions focused on how you save up to afford some of those things that are the biggest drains on our summertime budgets – gas, food, clothing, auto repair expenses and, last but certainly not least, vacations! Win one of our weekly contests and we’ll give you some cash to help fund your expenses and make your summer just that much sweeter.

To get this ball rolling, here’s this week’s topic for you to comment on (There’s a $100 gift card for gas on the line!):

Share your tips for saving gas or saving cash to pay that big bill at the pumps. You have until noon Sunday, July 8, to share your tips on Patch. You can also upload photographs that demonstrate your money-saving techniques. Just add them right to this story (but only the comments count for the contest).

One winner will be selected at random each week from all of those who enter by commenting. We’ll announce the winner from this week’s contest as soon as the name is selected and the winner has been contacted.

Now here’s that fine print:

* Open to legal residents of the 50 United States, the District of Columbia who are 18 and older. * To enter, post a comment on this story.* All entries must be received by July 8, 2012, 12:00pm Eastern Time.* You may enter once.* 1 winner will be selected in a random drawing for each week’s drawing.* One (1) Grand Prize Winner will receive the $100 gift card for Week One of the contest.* Click Here for complete Official Rules.

Using horses to pull the car while it is in neutral, while not really practical could improve gas mileage. With the elections coming up gas will continue to fall or at least remain steady so store up now. Finally, use a bicycle or walk as much as possible - advantage here is that it could actuially improve your health.

I wait for Publix to offer their get a $50 gas card for $40 when you spend at least $40 at the grocery store and then I buy at least two cards as we always spend at least $100 a week there. That gives me $20 in free gas and the cards don't expire! It's a great way to help pay for that vacation by car trip.

The Publix gas cards ($10 off a $50 card) are great. Also, Costco gives a 3% discount on gas bought with their credit card. While driving, do not accelerate quickly and try to cruise to a red stoplight rather than speeding up and slamming on the brakes. Drive less, coordinate your chores and ride a bike!!

Sam's Club offers very affordable prices, but we use http://gasbuddy.com/ and the App to find the cheapest gas in the area we are in. Additionally, its logical to buy gas when we are away from the immediate freeway exits, so we keep that in mind to fill up the tank proactively instead of being reactive.

I save at least 30% by grocery shopping at Aldi's. My sister turned me on to this European grocery chain. You have to bring a quarter for the cart (that you return and get the quarter back). Save big on fresh produce! They are no frills, you bag your own groceries but you are guaranteed to save $$$.

When we leave the house for more than an hour, we set the thermostat to 80, normally 77. Close curtains in sunny rooms during the day--save your furniture/rugs, and cool the room at the same time. Our electric bill reflects our conservation of power. Buy gas in the morning, before the heat has caused gasses to expand in the holding tank and in the car tank. Keep to the speed limit, that saves a lot of gas, and keep the car tuned up. I, like others, try to do all my errands in one trip in one day. Avoid rush hour if at all possible. Too much start and stop driving.

Aldi's is great for canned goods, Steve's Produce on alt 19 is my place to go for fresh produce, and I have started canning again, both meats on sale & seasonal produce. I save by having a well stocked pantry. I have fewer trips to the store and fewer trips to the gas station.

C-o-a-s-t! I am always amazing when, as I am slowing down for a red light, drivers are flying up behind me, accelerate as they are zipping around me (often on the right), pull back in front of me and slam on their brakes to stop for the light. Now that they are in front of me they will get to their destination at least one second sooner. Save gas at every stop by allow your car to coast a bit and not doing directly from the gas pedal to the brake pedal. Reducing your aggressive driving may save you from an accident or traffic ticket as well!

I try to consolidate trips and get all my errands done at the same time. Regular maintenance on the car, like oil changes helps fuel economy. I recommend nitrogen in your tires, too, as it saves money in the long run...I rarely have to check my tire pressure because, unlike air, there is little variance with temperature changes. I also frequent Dollar Tree stores to save money on things that cost more elsewhere, but are the same quality at $1.

Obviously driving less helps, but I also find that slow exceleration helps (even if it annoys the driver behind you and takes a little more time). Keeping your car in good maintenance helps too. Clean fuel filters and on time oil changes help the car run more efficiently.

Or there's the people I saw Friday night in a construction zone on I4...they were pushing the car. (Then again maybe it was broken =))

I can't avoid my long commutes, so I try to plan my trips so that I do my errands along the way and don't have to backtrack. Thankfully, I live near the Gas Express at Main & Rowan, so I try to keep topped off when I go by there, or by Sams Club. Also, if I have to go to Walmart (which I try to avoid!) I pick up one of their cash cards because I can save 3 cents a gallon at their station when I use the card. Publix does their $10 coupon for $50 gas cards pretty infrequently, but--when they do--I do the same thing as everyone else; I buy as many as I can afford to since I'm going to use them anyway...it's like money in the bank!

Where to begin? There are so many ways we save money and gas! The most obvious would be our normal weekly routine. We drive the most fuel efficient vehicle for all errands, watch the fuel economy to be make ourselves aware when we may not be driving as efficient as we could be, start watching gasbuddy for pricing BEFORE we need to fill up in order to plan filluos at the least expensive station without going out of our way, grab the gas card deals at Publix and CVS, build up $the off gas at winn Dixie, plan shopping trips by starting with couponmom.com to see which stores have the most deals on what we need then plan the route depending on the stores. We garden, compost, recycle, reuse and repurpose. We givehave ourselves a weeklygood entertainment budget that mustI pay for restaurants, vacations and unecessary expenditures. Any wee that we dont use all of the entertainment budget we roll that money over to us for a trip or something bigger.it makes us stop and think before spending. Those are the things that came to mind quickly without even having to think about it!

I always try to ride a bike if the distance is within reason., Those that think this isn't feasible because of age or injury should consider recumbent bikes or even electric golf carts that I always see zipping around neighborhoods. Also, you can use your credit card for gas, pay it immediately and reap the rewards from the creditors promotions for free stuff!!

Being that Pinellas co. an area that is highly-gridded ... mostly N-S and E-W ... very few curved roads. ...and odds are you will be driving diagonally somehow ... this can save you from waiting at red lights. Rather than driving two straight roads as far as you need to in both directions, try driving with green lights as long as possible one way, coming up to a red light, use this as a chance to turn right (or left as needed, you would be waiting at a red anyway), and adjust your trip, incorporating as many right turns as available, instead of idling, looking at red lights.
One of our cars has a mpg computer function ... I typically get 16 around town ... my wife 15. Neither one has that much a different driving style otherwise.

We plan to eat our meals at home or take healthy snacks, like protein bars or bags of nuts, with us to avoid the "I am so hungry I must eat now" drive-thrus. We didn't realize how much money we spent that way until we cut it out. Now we eat out twice a month at a nicer, healthier sit-down restaurant like Zen Forrest.

I attempted to read through all of the responses, but alas, the lunch hour is only so long. I work in downtown Tampa and have an SUV, so my vehicle is mainly used for that and that only. Between the gas prices, lack of MPG and SunPass prices, it adds up quickly. My girlfriend, on the other hand, works in Citrus Park and has a sedan, so we take her car most places to conserve on gas and we usually combine trips instead of making multiple. I'm a big believer in mass transit and wish we had a light rail to get around Tampa, but for the time being, this is the way we'll have to go.

I save cash by not subscribing to cable TV. Instead I watch all my favorite shows online, mostly at Project Free Tv. Sometimes it takes awhile to upload, but the best part is zero commercials. Also I use fuelperks from Winn Dixie and a friend who does not drive uses my card when she shops.Awesome!

I actually start by saving on my shopping in January. I shop after Christmas sales, January white sales, grocery stores have certain months that they put a particular type of food on sale. I watch for that. January and March I stock up on canned goods. April is frozen food month, etc. Usually at Savalot, Walgreens, Dollartree, anywhere theres a sale. I'm not interested in name brand anything, just decent quality items. I will spend about $20.00 on canned foods maybe two or three times a year. I stock up on roasts, turkeys, hams only in winter unless an extraordinary sale. I don't buy frozen foods or meats starting June 1st to coincide with hurricane season. I live off the meat and foods in my freezer(s) that I bought in the wintertime. This way if there is a storm and I lose power I won't lose much. I am a big fan of cooking meals and vegetables ahead of time. If there's a power loss for any length of time Iit'sa lot easier to heat up cooked food than raw partially frozen foods.. I only shop the sales, use coupons, go to thrift and salvage stores, garage sales, Walgreens, Freecycle.org, I plan my route and have a "movie night" with a frozen dressed up pizza, microwave popcorn and a Redbox dvd or I watch Hulu.com. This is a longer term of savings but I have more money to buy other things. I'm bold when I am using cash to pay for something because I look for discounts.

I have not had cable for several years now...cancelled as soon as tv became available online. Many of the networks offer next day viewing (the day after a show airs) and Hulu still offers many viewing options without a subscriptions. Check out your favorite tv network (Discover, History, A & E, etc) video options at their website. I for certainly "don't miss cable (er "ca-BILL") one bit.

I earn gift cards online on sites like Mypoints and Swagbucks - it's not likely to make me rich and requires me to dedicate a bit of time each day but when I'm super low on cash, a $20 gift card makes a huge difference.

A great way to save gas is to make sure all of the tires on my car have sufficient amount of air pressure, which I believe is 35 psi. Enough air in the tires mean less friction and less work my car has to do to make it move. It works great on long roadtrips. Also, making sure my oil changes are up to date so that everything is properly lubricated helps. These tips allow for the car to work not as hard to move itself, thus saving gas.

We try to save on gas whenever we can. I try to get all my errands done in one trip. Our kids take the school bus to school. My hubby always looks for ways to carpool. And when we buy our meat and some items from winn dixie we get gas perks to save money on gas.

The four of us are flying to NYC next week for free using AMEX miles. I pay for everything possible throughout the year with my card, and then we accumulate enough points to get free airline tickets. It beats using my debit card and earning nothing. In addition, we always take advantage of Publix gift card specials on gas cards, and we cut coupons to maximize our dollars. By avoiding waiting until the last minute to purchase things, we can almost always get a great deal. Lastly, I subscribe to several blogs that post great daily deals. We don't always need every deal they post, but it is very helpful to receive the info daily without having to dig for the deals, especially the deals related to maximizing coupons.

Tip #1 - Search for cheaper gas prices online or with your phone applications. Such websites and applications as www.gasbuddy.com/Gas Buddy. Just remember not to drive all the way across town for gas that's $0.02 cheaper than the gas station on your way home from work.

Tip #2 - Combine daily errands into weekly trips or stop at places along your daily route(s). It'll save you gas, and time.

Tip #3 - Carpool whenever possible. It's a great way to save your Benjamin's.

Tip #4 - Walk or ride your bike. If you live a 1/2 a mile from the convenience store, your friends place, or wherever, doesn't it make sense to ride or bike or walk?

Tip #5 - When driving at slower speeds, turn your AC off. AC is best when driving at faster speeds.

Tip #6 - Use your cruise control whenever possible. Regulating your speeds helps consume less gas.

to save money at the grocery store: don't buy processed crap. buy real food and learn how to cook (it's not that hard and so much healthier). buy produce that is in season. get creative adding beans and grains to your diet and don't eat as much crazy-expensive meat. never buy soda and fake juice, squeeze citrus into water instead.

I take advantage of the Publix gas card coupons. Wednesday is generally the day of the week that gas is the cheapest, and mornings, or the coolest part of the day, is the best time to fill up. Gas expands as it heats up so the cooler the gas, the more you get for your money.

Been using websites like www.southernsavers.com to help organize my shopping trips better while taking advantage of coupons and offers like BOGO. Carpool with friends and family. Doing more things at home instead of going out, such as online shopping and movies via instant-watch.

Food to fill all my babies bellies: animals included, lol..and gas $$$ to be their personal taxi while saving lots of money :)

How do I save money for gas? I use less gas and more leg power. I buy clothes at thrift stores...grow and trade as much food as possible...ride as a group...cook rather than eat out...make my own toothpaste and shampoo...turn off lights...and turn up the thermostat.

Gas tips: Buy gasoline during coolest time of day - early morning or late evening is best. During these times gasoline is densest. Keep in mind - gas pumps measure volumes of gasoline, not densities of fuel concentration, Keeps tires properly Inflated and aligned, Use cruise control( constant speed over long distances often saves gas.) Avoid heavy loads in your trunk, extra weight reduces mileage, Record all gas purchases for tax deduction purposes. In general; I like to compare prices online to save money and find the best deal ( from baby items to home decor). I love amazon.com and Overstock.com as well! Most of the time they have the cheapest stuff.

Carpooling. Driving only when necessary. Watch your speed and take care of your car. A better running car saves gas.

One weekly visit to grocery store that is planned for entire week's meals, thus saving gas negating multiple trips to store, and saving time. If you time it right, go for when your preferred store runs it's specials.

Just bought a motorcycle to help save on gas with commuting to work. Not a perfect solution for everyone, but works for me. Plus I have a hybrid car for the rainy season. Also, we have stopped eating out and now invite friends in for socalizing. Not a big sacrafice but eating out can be costly...
