Boy, 6, Hit By School Bus in Temple Terrace Area

The boy suffered non-life threatening injuries and the bus driver was cited for failure to use due care to avoid a pedestrian, Tampa Police said.

A 6-year-old boy was hit by a school bus after he got off at his stop Friday afternoon and suffered non-life threatening injuries, the Tampa Police Department reported.

Chrishawon Ellis was struck by the bus after he exited at North 51st Street and East Liberty Street in the Temple Terrace area around 3 p.m. and was crossing the street, according to police.

The driver, Betty Louise Thomas, 50, of Seffner, didn't see the child and stepped on the gas, police said. She was cited with failure to use due care to avoid a pedestrian.

The child was taken to Tampa General Hospital to be treated.

It was not immediately clear which school he attends, officials said.

The investigation is ongoing. Stay tuned to Patch for updates.

51st street and Liberty is NOT in Temple Terrace. IF you are going to write for a online paper that is named TEMPLE TERRACE patch at least know what is and is not Temple Terrace. you even put a Tampa police picture up then still called it Temple Terrace. Halfass efforts will always be noticed, quit mailing it in people.

Hi Rollo, we added the word "area" since the location of the crash is outside the city limits, but it's well within the coverage area for Temple Terrace Patch. The Tampa Police Department was the agency that responded to the crash. Sorry for any confusion.

That is being overly picky, Rollo. It's *barely* outside the Temple Terrace limits, I live in the road opposite to 51st and my kids go to Temple Terrace Elementary, use the Temple Terrace library, etc. Things that happen within Temple Terrace and the surrounding area are of interest to all that live in and around Temple Terrace.

Well if it is a monkey call it a monkey, don't call it a orangutan and hope we know what you meant

Perhaps Rollo's approach was a bit abrupt, but not too picky. I agree with Rollo. I get sick and tired of Temple Terrace lumped together with the high crime trash areas that surround it. You see it in all the major news outlet's. television, print and online. A crime will occur at 22nd and Busch, the media says Temple Terrace. It's Tampa, not Temple Terrace. We need our own city limit zoned zip code.

Instead of calling it Temple Terrace Area, just call it Tampa. When you report a crime at 56th and Busch you don't title it "Tampa Area".

Dead on JW all those reports report "Temple Terrace" we get a reputation for things that are not ours. All the crime from across the river gets attributed to us when our cops keep a lid on things pretty much. I thought the same thing just call our crimes the "North Tampa" area better yet "New Tampa"area that'll be fine with us.

If you dont like it.......MOVE! You could go somewhere like Yeehaw Junction. Its not close to anything and its always called Yeehaw Junction because there is nothing touching its boundries for miles around! Quit being so critical and remember this story is about a little boy that was hit by a school bus and that was the important point. Some people are so insensative. That's what's wrong with this world.

Amen just-saying....these people seemed to have missed the point of the story. It wasnt about city limits, it was about a child that was hit by a bus. I wonder if this discussion would have been taking place if it was any of your kids...

Perhaps if just-saying does not like to read first amendment comments they should move to Yeehaw Junction.

It really takes no journalistic skill to type Temple Terrace Area or Tampa. Actually, typing Tampa is far fewer letters.

Thats, my point exactly, Quentin. Temple Terrace has no where near the crime level as all of the neighborhoods right outside our boundaries. Our police and our citizenry get a bad rap. When crimes are committed within our city limits look at the booking sheets, 95% of the perps are from outside Temple Terrace.

Our police do an awesome job, they deserve better journalistic representation. Our schools are in the same situation.

And what about a follow up to this story. Was this 6 year old getting off the bus without a parent? If so, why is a 6 year old unattended? Has the bus driver had problems in the past?

The story is not just about the 6 year old getting hit, it is also about the bus driver, whose career and future may very well be ruined. How is the child?
