Mission:
We empower older youth and adults by providing high-quality, comprehensive education and training programs to enable them to succeed in higher education, workforce, community and society.
Program Description:
I CAN Adult Learning Program was created in 2003 to combat the adult low literacy problem in Hillsborough County. One out of 4 adults in Tampa reads below the 4th grade level --- level 1 literacy, according to the National Institute of Literacy.
The program provides adults (age 19 - senior citizen) functioning at various academic levels one-on-one, small group, and self-directed instruction in reading literacy, basic education, Pre-GED, college-level tutoring, test-prep, workforce development and life skills training in a supportive, caring learning environment.
Volunteer tutors are trained to work one-on-one or in small groups with students to ensure their success. There is a particular need for volunteers to work with students who are at a basic literacy level. Your willingness to provide at least one day a week as a literacy tutor will transform someone’s life forever.
