Moffitt Cancer Center Receives $10,000 from Walmart’s ‘12 Days of Giving’ Holiday Campaign

Walmart is awarding $10,000 to the Moffitt Program for Outreach Wellness Education and Resources (M-POWER) as part of its “12 Days of Giving” holiday campaign. The M-POWER team at Moffitt Cancer Center will use the money to support outreach and prevention activities for the 13th annual Men’s Health Forum. The free event will be held from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. March 9 at the University of South Florida’s Marshall Student Center.

During 12 consecutive days in December, Walmart will award a total of $1.5 million to 140 organizations across the country that are providing basic needs and services such as food, shelter, clothing and medical care. Moffitt’s M-POWER team applied for Walmart’s “12 Days of Giving” contest on Facebook, which had more than 21,600 nominations.

“Moffitt’s mission is to contribute to the prevention and cure of cancer. It is why we help organize events like the Men’s Health Forum,” said Venessa Rivera-Colon, M-POWER program manager. “It is important to educate the community about health issues, such as cancer, and provide screening and treatment services when necessary.”

The Men’s Health Forum is a shared effort by Tampa area hospitals, health care organizations, churches, community organizations, and businesses to provide help to men who are uninsured, underinsured, or do not have a regular health care provider. Attendees will receive health care information and wellness screenings for a variety of medical conditions, including skin cancer, blood pressure, and diabetes.

M-POWER fosters partnerships with community organizations to provide cancer education to underserved communities affected by health disparities.
